I have an swf file that contains sound and plays in my media player. However, VS X2 plays the (swf) but, without the sound. Is this beyond VS's capability?
I checked the properties of the file in VS x2 and under Audio, nothing was listed(blank) as there should be for recognized audio. Therefore, I conclude it is beyond VS's capabilty. I can convert it to mpeg with WINFF, and then it works just fine.

Where did your SWF file originate? Depending on the authoring program, it may be using an audio codec, Lame MP3, which VS just does not like, however Flash players like quite well...

I used "Any Video Converter" to convert a mpg to swf, which in turn did not play the sound. Apparently, VS did not like the audio in the swf file as it did not list it under properties as is normally done. I just learned something-thank you.
