ProX2 and Pull down removal???

Post by harhash »

Now I'm planning to purchase canon's AVCHD camcorder the HF200... this camera records 24p wrapped into a 60i container... (adds fields to fill the gap) I wonder if VideoStudio pro X2 can accurately remove those fields to convert the footage again into 24p??? any experiences?

I think I have the exact same question. Getting an AVCHD vid to youtube/HD has had my head spinning!

Here's a reply I got on the HV20/30/40 forum:
You need to deinterlace, one way or another. If you shot in regular 60i, you need to deinterlace with either "blend" or "single field", I prefer the latter. If you shot with PF24, you need to perform inverse telecine routine, see this topic for a free solution: http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=25044 It worked great for me for Panasonic AVCHD files.

If you do not deinterlace, both fields of every frame will be weaved into one progressive frame, and it will look horrible on the Web. I thought that YouTube deinterlaces all incoming video, maybe they changed their policy? But it is better to deinterlace first, then to upload, this way you can choose how exactly you want to deinterlace.
Here was the thread: http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=25130

When shooting in 60i, how does one deinterlace (to display nicely on youtube)?

Does pulldown removal require the $130 Cineform program? Yikes!

If you're hoping to post to youtube, it looks like they may be doing the deinterlacing. I just uploaded a 1280 x 720 mpeg-2 that was recorded at 60i. Rendered it in VS x2 from its native 1440x720. It displayed perfectly without deinterlacing.

Haven't uploaded a 24p recording yet.

If your video is for the Internet (including YouTube) you can (and should) render it as frame-based.

How is that done? In Video Save Options, I see an "I-Frames only" checkbox. How is frame-based rendering selected? Can't find anything in help about it.

Share>Create Video File>Custom. Click on the Options button, then the General tab. There you can choose your Frame Type.

Ok this is interesting. It seems that the Capture\Import video file feature is finally working. Just updated the patch today. Time to see how this works.

Thanks for your help. Ok I can see this. Somehow I thought we were supposed to pick "Upper Field First." Thats easy.

How does this "Upper Field" option relate to File\Preferences\Capture\"Image Capture Deinterlace."

If I choose this latter "Deinterlace" option, would it deinterlace files imported by Capture\Import Digital Media\"Import From Folder." Does this deinterlace the Canon files coming in from the HG10 by the import utility?

I guess I am wondering about the future movies (that I will apply the "Image Capture Deinterlace" to). Maybe those don't need "Frame-Based" while older clips that are already on the hard drive (that are interlaced) will need the "Upper Field First" checkbox.

Or do I need to select both "Image Capture Deinterlace" and "Upper Field First" to all?

Upper Field First = Interlaced. (The Upper Field of the frame i.e. lines 1, 3 , 5, 7 etc, appears first, followed by the Lower Field, i.e. lines 2, 4, 6, 8 etc. These occur very fast and together the eye perceives them as a single frame. Both AVCHD and HDV show their *interlaced* video using Upper Field First -- that's what the "i" in 60i means.)

Frame Based = Deinterlaced (Each frame is projected as a single image i.e. lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. This is why it is called Progressive Scan... And it's what 30p or 24p is all about.)

Thanks Ken. To produce a non-interlaced mpg for youtube, would I need to bother with the "Deinterlace" option in Capture\Import Digital Media\"Import From Folder?"

If I use this deinterlace option, then do I also need to specify "Frame Based" when creating a custom video file in Share?

They each seem to be accomplishing the same thing, one on the import end and the other on the share\create end.
