It's been a long time since I used UMSP 7 for avi editing and when I did I always encoded to MJPEG codec (software or hardware).
Now I would like to edit in XVid but for some reason Media Studio is not working with the Xvid codec. I am aware that UMSP 7 does not work with DivX (an old story) but haven't been aware that there has been any issues with Xvid.

Since DivX and Xvid are about the same (one free, the other not), it could be relative to the DivX problems..
I believe you also have VS X2?? If so try rendering your project in MSP7 to a DV video file. Then use VS to create your Xvid video file. You would just be using VS as a converter.

Thanks for the tip. Yes, I do have VS X2 installed and I also can render to DV in MSP 7.vidoman wrote:Since DivX and Xvid are about the same (one free, the other not), it could be relative to the DivX problems..

I could render straight to XVid in VS X2 without having first to go to DV and eliminate the use of MSP 7. However that will not satisfy my curiosity to find out why MSP 7 will not render with XVid.
Perhaps the answer is here:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... setup.html
See: 'AVI' Tab. However it just mentions previews. Whatever the meaning.

I don't have my "SE" version of MSP7 installed to test this, and currently not at home where I have MSP8 installed. I don't recall if MSP8 allows Xvid or DivX, I believe it does.
My suggested work around was based on the thought that you were making use of features such as more overlay tracks, and moving paths in MSP, where VS lacks. Using MSP7 you could do all your editing, then creating a DV then use VS to convert it to Xvid..
Just a side note, I don't know if you've read Ken's post about VS Pro not recognizing the most current version of DivX. When I upgraded to DivX 7, VS no longer had any DivX codecs available.

Thanks so much for following my thread, videoman. Yes as far as I can remember MSP 8 has no problems with XVid or DivX.
Well after using MSP since version 1, I just can't get the hang of the interphase on MSP 8, which has a different feel.
So now VS no longer recognizes DivX 7 !! It appears then that the story is repeating itself. I remember long time ago that after v.5.xx of DivX, the codec was no longer recognized by most apps.
Complaining with the publishers of DivX, lead to their reply to ask the software publishers to contact DivX to buy the rights. That has been a strategy which has been then considered by most as "an arm bender". Are they going back to that strategy again ??
If I could dig up v.5 of DivX I'm sure it will work on MSP 7.
