Video Capture
My capture problem was due to having the wrong capture plugin. I was using ULEAD VFW which I guess UVS 9 had as a default. UVS8 must have had Ulead Direct Show. Because when I switched to that, UVS9 worked. Somebody caught it after I did when I mentioned that the DV to DVD part would capture. Nobody seemed to catch the problem from the actual error message which I read but didn't know what to do about.
Thanks for the help. I always feel like I'm am reinventing the wheel when I try to figure out these problems. I appreciate the Forum members help.

Capture Plugin?
Sean, please explain what you changed to use a different capture plugin. I have Ulead v5!!!! Even that one worked intermittantly. Again, I can do the quick-scan capture (usually works) but cannot do a straight capture. Every time I select the straight capture from camcorder, the program crashes. So I have to do the quick scan whether or not I want to, which takes longer.
A related odd bug is I had a DV8 tape that somehow had the counter reset to 0:00 in the middle of the tape; maybe the camera shut itself off. Quick-scan was unable to figure out that the tape went back to zero so when it got near that point it would get very confused and rewind or fast forward inappropriately. I ended up having to capture the scenes near the new zero point one at a time (which quick-scan isn't best at doing; this would be a job for the regular capture if ONLY IT WORKED).
For those who want to know about my system, I can't tell you about the recording properties as I never even made it to regular capture, but I'm running Windows 2000 on a (I think) P4 system. The system recognizes the firewire card just fine. I have an 80 Gb drive but only 12 Gb free once I started a big video project. I despair that I won't be able to finish it.
PLEASE HELP, Ulead! I want to buy the upgrade but see no reason to if a basic component doesn't work. And v5 has always been so unstable that I'd sooner buy a different product than go back to it.

Madhaus Capture problem
I hope this helps you out. I am no expert at UVS but I have been using UVS 8 since it came out on home video type projects. When I was having problems capturing with the Video Studio Editor portion it was giving an error message indicaticating that the "video capture plugin failed to intialize." UVS9 was telling me what was wrong I just didn't know how to address the problem.
I'm running Win Xp P4 using a fire wire to capture from a cheap $279 Sharp Mini DV camcorder.
1.Make sure you have the latest version of Direct X (Direct X 9.0c) from Microsoft. I don't know if this is neccesary (I did not do this yet, but mine is like 9.0 anyway) but it will not effect anything negatively.
2. Open Ulead Video Studio 9 (UVS9). > choose Video Studio Editor > go to Tools > go to Change Capture Plugin > in Current Capture Plugin dialog box choose > Ulead Direct Show Plugin.
In UVS8 this was the default but in UVS9 another Capture Plugin was selected. Having never changed these settings before I had no reason to check them in UVS9.
Good luck
Sean

Thank you, GeorgeK!
I just installed VS9 (trial version) on my win2K machine and tried to create a simple test DVD from one avi file. I split it up into scenes, added a chapter menu and went to burn a disk. After 30 minutes or so, I got the dreaded "fatal error" message and the program simply stopped. Tried again - same thing. Got on this forum and saw the Windows Installer 3.1 note from GeorgeK, so I upgraded to 3.1 (V2). It worked!!
I now have a disk with working menus, but some other audio problems. At least the program doesn't self destruct!
I think GeorgeK should recieve an honorarium from Ulead for his excellent detective work!!!

Thanks for leting us know the results
Thanks to those who replied after reading my comments on MS Windows Installer 3.1.
It is very nice to know my pain has helped to reduce the pain of others.
It is also good to know that it can be possible to uninstall the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1, hopefully this will help others.
My recommendation is to obtain a image backup program, take a snapshot of your bootable hard drive image after each time you make a major change (and have proved it to be stable). Keep this back up and one slightly older (just to be paranoid). Sometimes Computer magazines offer one free.
Anyway, have fun Video Editing with UVS, I sure do ! (as time permits).

VS9 Crashes when selecting capture video
I upgraded to VS9 from VS8 which was upgraded from VS6SE. After copying "StrMach.dll" to the program file and adding it as a capture plugin in the Her-Cap file , VS8 recognizes my ADS USB Instant DVD 1.0 device and captures analog video.
When I open VS9 and select capture video the program crashes as described in the thread topic.
I run WinXP Pro in a Pentium 4, 3.06 Gz, Hyperthreading machine with 512 mb of DDR dual channel memory.
How can I find if my system has MS Windows installer 3.1 installed in order to uninstall it ? This is the only solution that I have not tried yet.

You should find it in My computer/control panel / add and remove programs.
you should backup your drive before, as mentioned above (thanks George)
Have you reported the problem to Ulead Tech Support.
Please do!
I am still waiting for a proper solution, but uninstalling the Windows installer 3.1 worked for me, what other effect it has on the operating system is to be seen.

I did as you suggested but could not find Windows Installer 3.1 as installed software in my system.
Yes, I will report the problem to ULEAD and see what happens

VS 9 crashes when selecting capture video
Since I did not receive any answer from ULEAD, I decided to capture with the softaware that came with the ADS Instant DVD 1.0 (CapWiz). I was able to capture analog perfectly and then edited in VS 9. Ulead support stinks. I am considering upgrading to true capture software.

Same here
I never got any help from Ulead on this either. I ended up visiting CNet and downloading one of their download programs. wish I could remember which one but I just changed computers (so I could do heavier video editing without it crashing) so I cannot tell for sure. It might be DVCapture. Anyway I captured with that and edited the rest with VideoStudio.
Unfortunately getting rid of Windows Installer did NOT solve the problem.
I have to try capturing with this new computer as it is WinXP instead of 2000; maybe the problem will go away? Hah.

Similar Problem
I also have a similar problem to the originator of this topic.
And cannot find the MS Win Installer in the Add Remove Programs Folder
I found the file in the systems directory but cannot rename it or delete it.
Where do I go from here?
