VS 9 crashes when selecting capture video

Post by Trevor Andrew »

When trying to Capture and selecting Capture Video or selecting Tools / Change Capture plug-in Video studio 9 gives the following message:-

(Vstudio has generated errors and will be closed by windows.
You will need to start the program.
An error log is being generated)

This closes VS 9.

Before installing the full version i tested the trial version, this reacted the same giving the error message and closing Video Studio.(yes maybe i should have sorted the problem using the trial, but you don't get tech support with trial versions)

I installed VS 9 on a clean system, i had removed all ulead products and deleted all remaining VS files.
Defragged my system.
Cleaned the files using Norton.

I have now had to reinstall VS 8 in order to capture my footage.

I have not seen this problem reported before, and there for assume to be a system fault.

Saying that i had no problems capturing with VS 8

vstudio.exe has generated errors and will be closed

Post by Martijn »

My conf: P4 2.3GHz 512Mb RAM, 80GB disk, Win2K Pro SP4, Matrox G400-TV AGP, Sony SC100E camcorder. PAL.

I've used v6SE for years.
Last month I installed v8 (trial) as v9 wasn’t available as a trial yet and capturing from analog sources with v8 went perfect without any problems (altered Ulead32.ini according to the Capture card compatibility list).
Bought the upgrade from v6SE to v9 (Elements webshop) and started capturing with v9 from DV (firewire), which was again awesome. I’d never been happier in my life.
Now I need to capture something again from a VCR, but as soon as I click Capture Video in the Capture tab, a Windows message pops up with the error message “vstudio.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to start the program. An error log is being generated.” and VS is then closed. Moreover this now also happens in v6 and v8! I can’t capture at all anymore with any of the Ulead products. I’ve never been more depressed in my life :(

Already tried fix attempts:
- reinstalled capture device driver
- removed all Ulead products including all Ulead references in the registry; then reinstalled v6SE with the v9 upgrade on top.
…still the same problem.
I’m sure, that a PC rebuild will fix it, but how long until it happens again?

Hint: whilst starting v9, the sound of the analog source disappears; when checking the capture device in Device Manager, the sound returns.

I realise, that this is more likely to be an OS problem rather than a software problem, however, it also seems like v9 caused the OS problem.

Does anyone has any ideas?
Thanks,
Martijn

Windows Installer 3.1 ?

Post by GeorgeK »

Hi,

I am glad there are finally other people having this issue.

I reported this issue in "Problem: UVS9, Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 Windows 2000", but no one replied.

I found that my issue was due to a Microsoft Update that I applied, called Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. It took a lot of pain  , I had to reinstall my OS, apply important service packs, DirectX 9.0c (and only these components), and then I found that UVS9 could capture video.
I then applied each update and application, one at a time until I fould the only one that caused UVS9 to stop capturing video was Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.

If you do the above test, you should find that UVS9 will capture video, but then there will be some application which you install, after which UVS9 will not longer be able to capture video, but will terminate as you described.

If you do go to this trouble, then please let us know what you finally installed that then crashed UVS9.

Only be mindful that I found that it was the second time that I tried UVS9 that it would terminate, not the first time, this means that after you install a program or MS Update, you have to run UVS9 twice before you will know if it is this program or MS Update that causes UVS9 to fail.

Good luck to you. My UVS9 is now capturing very well, I love it! it is great! :D

:D
Thanks George/Martijn

Well at least i know i am not on my own.

George i did notice that it took two attempts for this bug to kick in after reinstalling.

I also got a crash when going to Tools / Change capture plugin.

I assumed it may be related to my ATI AiW card, and that Studio was changing the capture plugin to match the TV tuner.

I tried my graphics card in another machine, which worked ok i think.
This machine may not have the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.

I will test the system again.

I have reported the problem to Tech support via E-Mail, when i finally get through the automated responses with luck I may get a human to talk to.

Thanks Again Trevor

I have had intermittent issues. Using a new laptop; Centrino 1.8, 512 RAM, firewire connection, 128 Mb Radeon video card. Occasionally while working or starting a capture I get the dreaded message "Video Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience."
I get the impression that it is slightly more stable if project properties are set BEFORE anything happens (but that's not constant) and I must say that I have successfully captured and edited a lot. It's not a huge problem, just a bit disconcerting.

Oh George I am one Happy Bunny. That Works :D
:D

I have uninstalled Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 . During which my pc recognized that VS 9 was installed and may not work correctly after uninstalling.

I thought I may have had to re-install VS 9, but things seem ok.

I can now access the capture screen without VS 9 closing down.
And Tools / Change Capture plug-in

I did a bit of surfing Microsoft and found this download page, Interestingly Version 3.1 has been withdrawn, see below.

Downloading the Windows Installer 3...

IMPORTANT NOTE: VERSION 3.1 has been withdrawn by Microsoft for unknown reasons. Version 3.0 is still available. To download version 3.0 (KB884016) click here.I have downloaded Version 3.0 but not installed as yet.

Once Again George Thanks

vstudio.exe not generating errors anymore!

Post by Martijn »

Thanks so much, guys!

I uninstalled MS Windows Installer 3.1 as well and guess what... I can capture again!! woohoo!

Not only am I substantially impressed by the support we give each other, but the speed with which this was done, has been phenomenal.

I do feel a bit sorry for you, George, that you were the one to have to go through the process of rebuilding, testing, trial and error, etc. For what it's worth, this will be hugely appreciated by a lot of video editors!

Thanks again!

It will be a big help if you could clarify this.

Million thanks to all those who help newbies like me !

New version - Win installer 3.1 v2

Post by fbrier »

I have not yet installed any version of Video Studio. I was just contemplating downloading the VideoStudio 9 trial and was checking out any issues. On seeing this thread, I checked out some of the links and saw that a new support article and version of the Win installer has been posted on the Microsoft web site in the last 24-48 hours. So this is not to say that the new version fixes the problem described in this thread, but just that it might. And it has a description of the bug that was fixed which was a silent failure on installing.

Argghgh!

I am getting the exact same behavior as the original poster. Whenever I go to the Capture tab, if I want to do a straight capture, VS9 crashes with the same error message.

I found this thread and installed Windows Installer 3.1 v2 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en, which was put up quite recently (May 12th).

I was hoping that would solve the problem. Alas, no. Restarted the computer and it still crashes. I had been using the Quick DV mode
but the last time I tried it that crashed too with the same error.

I only have 8 days left in the trial. I don't want to buy this product if it doesn't work as advertised! Do I have to uninstall/reinstall to get it to work? That could take hours! I'd do it if I know it would work, but would hate to waste the time if it won't.

Any ideas?

UVS9 Trial Crash On Capture

Post by woxof »

Why isn't Ulead addressing this? I have UVS8, no problems wanted to upgrade because what the heck 2 new features are surely worth $50? My error message is "Failed to initialize capture plug in.. yadda yadda yadda... Capture driver not installed properly" (and then some cryptic numbers beginning with 15001:71:1 and 15023:4:21. If I close 9 and open 8 no problem. This is both using my Sharp DV to capture analog from VCR and Sharp DV direct capture from Mini DV. It seems we have the same problem but different error notices. What is necessary to uninstall the 3.1 win installer? What is it for ? To install programs? I'm really bummed because the BUY.com deal at $20 dollars for UVS9 after 2 rebates ends on the 05/16 and I'm not buyin' If there isn't some way to get the trial to perform. Maybe Ulead could just stiff us for an add on that would allow color adjustment and Chroma Key in UVS 8 for $20 and we wouldn't have to s.... with the UVS9.

Thanks

javascript:emoticon('') Solved My issue On Capturejava

Post by woxof »

My previous message (above) indicated I had the same problems as others with a different error message. Maybe not. I set a RESTORE point and then uninstalled Win Installer 3.1. I reinstalled UVS9 Trial. Nothing. I then tried the DV to DVD wizard instead of Capture and It recognized my Sharp Camcorder! I then returned to the video editor portion and still got the same error message as previously posted. Just for grins and giggless does anybody know what I did that made capture work? Remember that UVS8 has worked fine at the same time (I don't try to keep them both open at the same time). I'll let you know. It was so stupid but I still don't know why I had to do this in UVS9. I'm just checking the quality of message board info here.
Thanks

Just to try to share info and maybe help woxof:
I had intermittent problems (see earlier post in this thread) but was able to capture fairly well most of the time. In response to this thread I uninstalled Windows Installer 3.1 (thanks guys!) and behaviour seemed better (hard to tell, with intermittent crashes).
Then I installed Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (I just like to keep updated). Haven't used VS much at all since, but it seems to work fine; capturing no problem.
It may be a multi-faceted problem. :?
