Capturing video from my Motorola HD DVR

Post by metmot »

It took me a while but I was finally successful in a workflow to capture video via firewire from my cable company Motorola DVR. The nice thing is you can rewind and save whatever you fancy onto the DVR and then capture it later at your convenience to the PC. Then edit in VS as you like.

I uploaded this sample clip as an experiment and am very happy with the resulting quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9lgl7dFxKE

IMO it is better quality than most of the similar clips you see on youtube. I saved it from my ESPN HD channel then captured it upon replay later.

BTW I despise Phil Helmuth even if I respect his poker skills.

I was waiting to see if there was any interest first or if I was just "out there".

Actually I used the instructions and drivers I found here:
http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/

So I can claim no credit.

What took some time was to get it configured and working (I am not that good at following simple instructions it seems) but it's pretty cool to play with once you do. You can edit and play with the streams in VS however you like once you capture them. Or just share cool clips you find amusing in good quality.

BUT...........

I had to buy a 15' firewire cable to reach my PC from the DVR without rearranging the living room.

Anyone who wants good quality cables of any kind for a good price I love this place too. http://www.sfcable.com/

I now have one more hobby to pursue which I have no time for.
