Please help me before I lose my mind.

I'm using VideoStudio Pro X2 on Windows XP.

I have some clips from a DVD in my library. I can click on a clip and preview is normal. I then drag the clip to the Video track, where I can ONLY view it if I select "Clip". If I select "Project", I see nothing in the preview.

Furthur, if I add some text to the Title track, I can see IT if I select "Project", but NOT the video clip.

Please tell me what I am missing.

Are those DVD clips copied from the disc onto your harddrive? They should be found in the working folder you have designated in the Preferences.

Go HERE and download the latest MS Direct-X drivers. The most current is dated March 2009. It seems to fix things with VS. DirectX updates are not included with the automatic windows updates, so they must be manually downloaded and installed.

These are indeed DVD clips copied from the disc onto my harddrive, but they are in a folder that is not the default "working folder".
I wasn't aware that it made a difference, since when I "Import" from a folder VS gives me the option to browse to any folder.
Do they have to be in the default "working folder"?

Regarding Direct-X drivers, I have the latest version.

No. I think what Ron is saying is that if you ripped the DVD using VS, then the clips will be found in whatever is designated as the working folder, whether it be the default or one of your choosing.

Regarding Direct-X drivers, I have the latest version.

Don't be fooled by the version number. In Microsoft's infinite wisdom, the periodically update DirectX but don't necessarily update the version number. Make sure you have the version dated March 2009.

I did not use VS to actually "rip" the videos from the DVD, I used a separate application for that - the same one that I used for all the clips that work as they should.

My directx version is 9.0c - and when I use the link provided ( which I have ) it tells me that the version that I have is "newer" than the version I'm trying to install.
Along that line, I don't see how my version of directx could allow me to edit (with titles) and use the "Project" preview on some videos but not on others.

Well this is new information. You only told us before that you couldn't view the clips in Project mode. I, and probably the others that have answered, assumed you were speaking about all your clips.

Regarding the DirectX, the link Ron provided is the latest version. I don't know how you could possibly have a newer version.

I apologize for not including the fact that some of my clips act normally, ie. they can be edited with title text and previewed in "Project" mode.

Regarding directx, I did follow the link Ron provided and it was upon running the directx update from that link that the update said that the version that I had was "newer".

The Microsoft DirectX site still shows the March version, to which Ron's link leads, is still the latest. I have searched the Microsoft site for anything more recent, and though it lists an SDK (i.e. not End User) version as having been released two days ago, the link given for it still leads back to the March SDK version. So again I can only conclude that it is the latest version

In any case, run dxdiag and it will give the exact version number. For DirectX 9c it should be version 9.26.1590 -- so if you have a number higher than that, there must indeed be a later version lurking somewhere.
