Share step - make DVD - no preview of clips (trimming, etc.)

Post by laurentje »

New PC (Dell) with Vista 32; re-installed first VS10+.

Because I have now Vista 32: I bought and installed a full VS12 (X2 PRO?).

Problem: when I go to the Share-step I can add clips to the project but I cannot see them in the right. So cannot add chapters or trim the clip in the share step. The buttons below the preview window stays inactive.
When I go further: I cannot see the preview of the video "Press 'play' button to start preview" stays on the screen.
When I go further till burning (DVD-folder), the program makes the folder.

This is a sad situation: I bought VS10+ 2 years ago and now VS12 :( . I do not have a program fully operational.
Any idea where to start?

It has become almost a mantra with me in recent months to suggest people first go to the Microsoft DirectX website and download the latest update patch. The current one is dated March 2009 and can be found at http://tiny.cc/qb58I

Note that DirectX is not included in the usual pattern of Windows automatic updates. It has to be done every so often by the user manually. So unless you have recently done this, you are probably still using the original, non-updated version of DirectX which came with Vista -- even if your computer is a relatively new one.

Note that the patch updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in both VS11 and X2 which appear linked to Windows updates. The menu preview , 'building preview graph' and other problems in the burning module seem to be amongst them.

Good luck!

Hi

I had a brand new Vista PC, I had some problems with Video Studio X2 trial.

Installing the latest Direct X version cured all my problems.

Strange, you would expect a new updated OS to include the current Direct X.

May not cure all problems but Installing the latest Direct X does make a difference.

Yes, but VS10 was written with code from the time of Ulead. Corel now owns it and completely re-wrote the software with Version 11. So it responds quite differently in some circumstances. The preview and other problems were only apparently in VS 11 and now 12, but not in earlier versions. And as I say, I think it has something to do with Windows (and particularly Vista) updates.

And just because your computer is only 2 weeks old doesn't mean much in the Direct X sense. It would have Windows installed which, unless it already has a service pack included, would have the original version of DirectX 10 available when the Vista software was packaged. There have been several updates of DirectX since then, and as I say, they are not updated by the Vista/Windows automatic updates.

But let us know whether it helps!

My PC came with Vista SP1, installed.

Anyway, I updated DirectX with the march/2009 version and it solved the problem.

Great thanks to Ken and Trevor.

Great thanks to Ken and Trevor.
Now we are in december 2011, I had to do a restore of my pc to the factory settings. Then all the win-updates came and I installed all this. I have now VISTA with servicepack 2 installed. I re-installed VSx2 + patch1. Now I have exactly the same problems as mentioned above  (in the Save step - in the right window I cannot play or trim a clip)
When I execute dxdiag, I see that directx11 is installed. I do not find a more recent version of directx11. Should I try to install patch2 (for win 7) but I have only Vista or that else could I do?

If you reinstalled Vista, then your version of DirectX is the factory build. Windows Updates do NOT update DirectX. You have to do it manually. And it will not change the version number, but it will be a different build. So hopefully, a manual update of DirectX will again work.

I am a little confused, though, since DirectX 11 is the version which works with Windows 7, and not Vista. Vista uses DirectX 10...

Hi laurentje

Can you update your profile to include your PC specification, then we will know if you are running Vista or Windows 7

This a link to the Direct X download. As far as I know this is the latest version

Download the file (directx_Jun2010_redist.exe)
Run to extract the contents, create a new folder to hold the files.
Run DXSETUP.exe to install the files.

I think that directx11 was installed with ServicePack2 of Vista. In another forum (of games) I saw the suggestion to run the update of directx9c  . I never thought that returning back in software versions should work :?:
But I found no real other solution to try this DXwebsetup.exe of M$. And it worked for me: authoring is now again possible :) .
What is strange on the M$-site (English version): DXwebsetup.exe is for updating to 9.0c: see link: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35
On the Dutch site of M$ DXwebsetup.exe is updating to the 'latest version' (translation): see link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/nl-n ... laylang=nl

Anyway dxwebsetup.exe was the solution for me.

Hi

Thank you for the information and feed back, I have always used the file downloaded from DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
The manual approach does seem to update files that Windows Auto Updates do not. Why is just a mystery :?:

:D Happy that you have managed to fix your problems.

It's silly wording on the MS site since if you look down below, in the small print it makes it clear it also applies to Win 7, Vista and other OS apart from XP, and these other OS clearly use more recent versions of DirectX than 9.0c.
