I have a project ready with a lot of scenes. I need to insert a shot in this project. I have all layers padlocked. When I insert the clip and try to shorten the shot and error pops up saying:

Invalid Handle : 15036:0:0


Why?

David -- welcome to the forums! But I am afraid we are going to need more information than what you have provided. In the first place, what do you mean by 'shot'? Is is a new video (if so what format, and how long)? Or is it just a still photo (if so what format)? And if the latter, how long do you want it to last?

Yet you also say you have all layers padlocked (not sure what that means in practice with X2)... but if you have everything locked to the point you cannot add anything, how do you expect to add anything? Or do you mean you have Ripple Editing enabled (or not)???

We also should know something about the original video in the project -- where did it come from and what are its properties? What sort of camera was involved?

Get back to us with this information, and hopefully someone might be able to help...

Thank you Ken for your rapid answer. In my project I am using captured scenes which are in AVI. The camcorder was a Canon XM2. A shot is an AVI file. The project consists of many scenes (AVI files). As you have confirmed, I have enabled the Ripple Edditing. I have the main Video Track, 2 Overlay Tracks plus a Voice TRack, two Title Tracks (VS X2 only) and a Music Track. In the 2 Overlay Tracks I have inserted JPEG File as Photos using Pan & Zoom. With these JPEG Files I have also inserted some video clips in AVI.

i forgot to insert a video clip in AVI (in this case named 'Alpha' clip) which is 5 minutes long and this video clip was inserted between clip (scene) no. 10 and clip no. 11. With the Ripple Editing enabled, the Overlays Tracks moved forward to be exactly matched with the Video Track. Now I am trying to cut a piece from the Alpha clip about 30 seconds but VS will tell me that the Video track and the two Overlay Tracks will loose their position is the Ripple Editing is disabled.

I see this action as an major flaw in the software. It seems that if you forgot to insert a scene, one cannot insert any if the project is complete. THis does not make any sense. I believe that Premiere CS4 does not have this limitation.

I hope I have explained myself better.

Instead of trying to cut the Alpha clip while in the timeline, try cutting the clip while it is in the library, then insert that correctly-sized clip into your project.

I did the same as you suggested and it worked by experimenting before I read your last reply.

Instead of inserting a scene/shot/clip, if I need to delete one and have the Ripple Editing enabled, VS deletes all tracks.

How can I delete a scene without jeopardising the coherence of all tracks?

Just to clarify, VS doesn't delete all tracks, only the clips that are directly below the one you want to delete.

To answer your question, if the clip you want to delete is in the main video track, and Ripple Editing is on, you can't. That's the way it works.

To me, Ripple Editing is mainly for inserting a clip. It is very difficult to use for removing a clip, unless that clip is at the beginning of the timeline.
