The computer I have is only a couple of months old (four, tops). Great HP Pavilion with two DVD burning drives, one of which can play back Blu-ray discs (although I haven't used it for that yet). Have probably a half-dozen programs which can burn a DVD (which I usually do from an ISO file), and I'm having a couple of problems here:
1. Both of my drives are supposed to be locked from being opened during the burning process. I usually use DVD Decrypter to burn, but have also used DMF6, ImgBurn and Nero to burn discs.....but I get a message box telling me "Unable to lock volume for exclusive access. Reason: Access denied" (something like that). I click the option to ignore to continue with the disc burn and it works......but how can I set things here in Vista (yeah....frickin' Vista again!) to stop that message from showing up?
2. Big problem with the Blu-ray compatible drive (it only reads BR, doesn't burn them) is that particular drive can read and play a disc (either store-bought or one already burned).....but now it can't BURN a disc (no matter what brand I use, and I usually always use Verbatim, but I also just tried a TDK disc...and also no matter which program I use, DMF6 or another program). It not only seems to take a much longer-than-needed time to recognize a blank disc when I put one into that drive, but when attempting to burn (and I always use nothing but DVD+R for burning movies) it doesn't work. I then have to abort the process, but the blank disc is still useable....I just have to burn in the other drive. However, when testing it with a rewritable DVD+RW, it will burn.....but when doing so with DVD Decrypter, that program's memory buffer doesn't get filled up as it should (actually, the buffer SHOULD be fillled in any such program when burning). Anyway, when using a rewritable disc, it burns the movie but the information line for Write Retries immediately starts filling up and goes way past 25,000!! Also, in this burning drive I'm having problems with, I can't seem to erase/format a disc because of this damned problem. Also, when I insert a blank DVD+R into the drive, DVD Decrypter tells me the "book type" is CD-ROM, which is nonsense....it should be DVD-ROM, so obviously there's misinformation in there somewhere.
ADDENDUM: I haven't done any audio CD burning on this new computer yet, so I tried opening DVD Decrypter (since it has the information window), selected the problematic F drive (the Blu-ray compatible drive), and inserted a blank CD-R. It not only correctly recognized the disc and disc format, it read it faster than when I insert a blank DVD+R.
Have tried one solution I found in Windows Help regarding the clearing of some particular Upper and Lower Registry Filters, but that did no good.
I'm trying to find answers online before I have to disconnect the damn computer to take it in to the Geek Squad at Best Buy (at least we're covered for two years on this thing). This is ticking me off now....my partner specifically made sure this new computer had two burning drives in it because of all the disc burns I do....and now I only have ONE burning drive that works.
HELP!
Cannot burn in Blu-ray compatible drive with DMF6

Not sure....the Nero that came with my new system is Nero Express Essentials/Nero 7 Essentials/Nero Start Smart Essentials, and I don't see anything indicated as Nero InCD anywhere (unless I'm not looking in the right place). I'm also pretty certain that I've tried using Nero to burn from an ISO I created, so I don't know if Nero is the problem.vidoman wrote:It sounds like a job for Geek Squad. However do you have Nero InCD installed? It is a packet-writing utility, that hi-jacks DVD Burners. It will not allow any other programs access the drive. Try disabling it or uninstalling it.
Again, in short, my Blu-ray compatible drive (playback only, not for burning Blu-ray) which is the problem drive, simply doesn't recognize a blank DVD+R when it's put into the drive....it reads it as being a CD-ROM book type. I can play back any disc, and do what I want with a blank CD, but not with a blank DVD.
If I disable the entire Nero group (I don't think I'd want to uninstall it, even though I use several other programs for what I do), how can I do this correctly in Vista so the Nero programs are "disconnected" (as it were) from the F: drive (the designation for the problem drive)? I did open up Nero and saw it had selected the F: drive as the default for burning, so I tried changing that to the E: drive (my non- Blu-ray drive) which I have set in Vista as my default burning drive.

Well, I tried everything I could Google up for this problem drive...it's a HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GBC-H20L ....and nothing yet. It still doesn't recognize a blank DVD (I always use DVD+R, and generally Verbatim brand). I uninstalled the particular Nero package on my system (creating a System Restore point first), and even reinstalled some of the programs I use (per some info I found online which suggested that might help) like DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and ImgBurn.....to no avail. Everything else about this drive works and it recognizes burned discs, etc....but doesn't correctly recognize blank DVD's.
