I'm on VISTA home premium, for my TOD files (from JVC GZ-HD40) when I open Explorer the thumbnail is the Windows media player logo, How do I get it to display the 1st frame from the clip, just like it does with the DV AVI clips?

I don't think Windows can 'see' that format as such. You might find that it will produce the first frame if you change the extension from .tod to .mpg, but that of course is somewhat risky in light of the editing you will be wanting to do. But it is the only way I can think of to achieve what you are after...
