Lossless video codecs

Post by Pixelation5 »

I am someone thing high standards and I refuse to use compression.

Does anyone know of any quality freeware lossless compression codecs for AVI and not a beta?

I know MPEG-2 is lossy by design, however, does anyone know of a way to put a MPEG-2 back together without degrading the quality?

There is no way of doing it. mpeg is lossy, converting it loses quality, converting back to mpeg for use on a std dvd will lose quality.

If you want lossless then get a minidv camcorder, this records to dv and is considered a lossless format.

Even so, when you make your dvd you still have to suffer compression, but at least you don't lose anything in converting or editing.

If you have to start with an mpeg file then I'm afraid you will have to live with the fact that you will lose some quality along the way.

Mpeg was designed to be watched, not editied.

As has been mentioned quality is in the eye of the beholder, so what you lose may not be of a concern to you.

Buy some high quality conversion programmes, the better they are the less you lose, look at sorenson squeeze or canopus procoder.
