Runtime Error when opening PSP X2 Ultimate

Post by posnpretty »

I bought Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 about a year ago, and I loved it. A couple of months after I bought it, Corel sent me an offer to upgrade to X2 Ultimate, which added some extra programs (which I rarely use). All these months PSP X2 has been working fine. However, lately when I try to open PSP X2, it crashes before opening saying there is a Run Time Error. Twice now I've used the Repair feature in Add/Remove Programs to reinstall PSP X2, and it worked the next time I opened it. But after that, I got another Run Time Error again tonight, and had to run Repair again.

I am running XP SP3 with 2 GB RAM. My PC is Pentium 4, 1.9GHz. I have 19.9 GB free space on my C: drive, and I have the My Documents folder on a 500 GB second hard drive (where all my photos and other documents are stored).

I believe the first Run Time Error was after PSP X2 crashed while I was trying to edit a 600 dpi scanned photograph. (I prefer working with higher resolutions when I'm editing antique family photos because they tend to have spots, cracks, and other flaws that are easier to remove when the res. is higher.)

I saw another post about clearing the Temp files, but I've never done that before, and I'm not sure what I'm doing. I went to C:\Documents and Settings\My User Name\Local Settings\Temp, and there were lots of folders in there, including a Temp Files folder. Inside the Temp Files is another folder: PSP409E4_User Name, and inside that folder is another folder: PSP71, which is empty. Should I delete these?

Most of the folders inside the Temp folder are empty, but there are some that have files. When I select the Temp folder in the My Documents view, it shows there is 173 MB in it. Should I delete ALL of the folders inside the Temp folder, or just the files inside each folder?

Thanks for your help!

I think you can do this in a "user friendly" way by clicking on start -> run and then writing "Cleanmgr.exe" inside the run dialog and click "run".

Then you select the drive where you have the temp files (C)..

On the next step select just the option "temporary files" and deselect all the others and hit "ok".

then try to start psp..

If it still doesn't works you could try to rename your "My PSP Files" folder that should be inside "C:\Documents and Settings\My User Name\Documents" to something else like "My PSP Files back" and then start PSP again.

Warning: doing this you'll lose all your preferences, this is why I told you to rename that folder and NOT to delete it.

If it works after renaming it, you can try to copy over all the folders (one by one not all together) from the "My PSP Files back" to the (new) "My PSP Files" folder (that psp should recreate on startup) ..

you can start copying one folder at once like this:

Code: Select all

- copy first folder
- start psp
  -- does it starts?:
  - yes:
    - close php
    - copy second folder
    - restart psp and so on
  - no: inside that folder you have some corrupted files that are preventing psp from starting..
let me know if it helps..

bye,
Giovanni.

Giovanni, thanks so much for responding. However, I have already deleted all of the folders and files in the Temp folder. It didn't seem to break anything, and PSP opened the next time. I haven't had time to keep working in PSP, though so I'm not sure if it's been fixed or not.

If it crashes again, should I just do a complete uninstall and reinstall of PSP?

Is it normal for PSP to crash when trying to work in a 600 dpi file?

Not sure about this. The most difficult thing to understand it is why it's crashing...

actually I didn't tried to open a 600 dpi file yet, but I don't think that it is normal. Maybe something happened when you opened..

Depends.. which was the size of the image in pixel? How much ram do you have on your pc and about how many were used? are you using windows xp or vista? .. and so on.

I am using Windows XP SP3. I have 2 GB ram. I don't remember the size of the photo, but now that it crashed again today when I tried to open PSP I don't think the size has anything to do with it.

The exact error message:
Runtime Error!

Program: ...l Paint Shop Pro Photo X2\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
Should I try uninstalling and reinstalling? I am very frustrated at not being able to use PSP. I didn't even get a year out of it - not worth the price for it to act like this.

Edited to add: I just remembered that when I closed PSP X2 yesterday (PSP was working fine), I got a notice that there was an update to install. I installed the update, and got a message that the update was successful and then PSP closed. But now today when I first tried to open PSP it gave me the above Runtime Error, which is the same error I've been getting for a couple of weeks now.

Can you please report the full error? does it refer to Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes? and if yes, which version?

Have a look here:

But as first thing you could try to reinstall / fix current installation by going to control panel > add /remove programs and when you click on paint shop pro you should be asked to fix or to uninistall (but not sure about this)

let me know.. Hope it helps.

Found another two links that could be useful.. read carefully the first one:

(but don't pay too much attention to the virus related part. and don't install two antivirus in the same windows installation  )

The title of the error message is:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
The rest of the error message I already quoted above; no version was listed.

I have already tried to repair PSP X2 by going to Add/Remove Programs and clicking on Repair. I did this twice, but each time I did, PSP would open one time okay, then the next time I tried it would give me the same Runtime Error message.

I contacted Corel Customer Support using their chat feature, and the person who helped me had me install these two downloads via links he posted on the chat:

Microsoft .NET 3.5
Microsoft Visual C++2008

Then he told me to try opening PSP again, and it worked. Maybe it's finally fixed - I sure hope so.

Thanks,
Cyndi

The fact that after you repair the install it works, and then it stop working without you doing something particular, lead me to think that it could be related to a malaware / virus problem as suggested in the first link on my latest post.

(repairing the install you restore the correct version of the library but after some time it gets corrupted again..)

If it happens again please try check this thing too if you didn't it yet.

p.s.
just for know.. is that "Microsoft Visual C++2008" you downloaded, the same (runtimes) that I suggested to you on my previous post? (this link)

No, the link the chat person gave me is this one:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
