What is the preferred OS for VS X2

Post by deonholt »

Hi there.

I was just wondering ... What would be the preferred OS to use. I currently use Vista Ultimate but I also know that Vista eats all memory you have. I have 5Gig memory. Will XP not let VS use more of this 5Gig than Vista?

I have 2G of RAM. You will have to do the test for us.
XP and Vista 32 bit systems do not use any RAM over 4G ( actually less : 4096MB - 640MB graphic e.g. - 32 - 16, = approximately 3408MB ). Though some say that you can see the whole 4G with all patches/updates

How can I see how much RAM I have left of my 5Gig on a Vista 32it machine with all latest updates and patches?

The problem with Vista isn't so much how much RAM it uses up but how many running processes it has on the go. To get the best out of any computer no matter what operating system is in use, you have to streamline it to the minimum number of necessary processes for the task in hand.

Do you really want to do your video editing and at the same time have your computer:
Monitor your house burglar alarm system
Play a DVD while its rendering your video in the background
Record a TV Show (or two if you have a dual tuner)
Mass email all of your customers

OK I am exaggerating but I am sure you get the message.
For XP I have written a guide for stripping XP down to the bare essentials for Video Editing. Click Here For Details
