AVCHD 25p: Transitions, titles are rendered as interlaced.

Post by Klaas »

I shoot my home video's at 1920x1080 at 25p (AVCHD).

When using Video Studio X2 for editing everything works fine. However the final result is not so good. I use smart rendering and the "un-touched" video is perfect.
But the newly rendered parts (like transitions, titles) aren't. They are treated as interlaced material. When looking at the options when creating the final movie,
you can only choose Upper Frame of Lower Frame. Not a full frame. So the parts that need to be rendered are treated as interlaced.

Resulting in the following effect:

Full frame: http://x68.nl/vlcsnap-6408.jpg

I have tried to find a solution. Even did extensive digging in the profiles. (Like "DF_TMPL_AVCHD_PAL.dat").
But couldn't make heads or tails from it. I hoped I could find some kind of parameter which would allow me to select full frame instead of upper/lower field.

I hope the problem is clear and I explained it correct.

Does any one have a good solution?

* Remark
When you are using the same kind of footage as I and you do not see this effect (very visible with up or down scrolling text). It may because most players
will automaticly deinterlace. When deinterlacing is turned off. It will be very visible.

Movies are recorded at 1920x1080 at 25p (progressive)
Players used: MPlayer Classic HC, VLC (deinterlacing deactivated)

Hi

Try changing the project properties to match the video file, you should be able to select ¡¥Frame based¡¦ as the frame type.

Then use Share Create Video File¡XSame As Project Settings.

PS

can you reduce the size of your image, seems a bit large for my screen.

Hello Trevor,

Thanks for the reply, I already tried playing with the project setting. The best I can choose is MPEG2 1920x1080 at Full Frame.

But the problem still exists when generating the final AVCHD film.

Is your example a scrolling title"? Are these pics taken from the PC screen?

The title is indeed a scrolling text. The photo behind it is a still.
The pics are screen captures. Done with VLC player.

I think at least your screen capture has a problem. It should take one frame(two fields) but it clearly captures 3 fields or maybe even 3 frames of the deinterlaced PC image

I don't understand you.. the capture is correct. This is what the screen looks like. Please have a look at the large picture (HD size: 1920x1080).

It consists of the upper and lower field displayed at the same time. As it should with progressive.

Sorry, I mis-interpreted. Your capture is indeed OK. It shows a frame (two fields), but the owl is not moving, therefore it doesn't show interlace effects. Can't you capture an "unrendered part where there fast is motion...I think you will get the same effect. And remember that when you add a title, also the original frames together with the inserted title need to be recreated.

The reason for the titles to show the interlace effect is because X2 thinks it is interlaced. Therefore the scrolling text are also calculated as interlaced. The upper and lower field differ in time. When working with interlaced footage this is perfect exactly what you want. But for progressive footage X2 should place the two fields in the same time.

Time travel can be a bit hard to explain
