Saving DVD Menus

Post by JasonJoel »

Maybe I'm missing something (very possbile).

After editing a video, I click on SHARE and then CREATE DISC to make the menus for the DVD I want to create, then I burn the DVD.

Is there any way to SAVE the DVD menu layout I create in the project? So that next time I load the project I can edit/modify the layout?

So far I haven't found a way to do this. So I've been having to:
1. Complete all DVD menu creation in one sitting. Which is not always convenient.

2. Burn DVD to ISO file so that I can make more copies ata a later date. As opposed to being able to just load the project file and reburn... I have all the original video files on my computer, so the project file is all I should really need, in my opinion. So I'm wasting a lot of space (yeah I know instead of saving the ISO I could save a burned DVD to copy).

3. If the menus, or video, don't turn out quite right I have to completely recreate the DVD menus next time I reload the project as the DVD menus don't seem to save in the project file (hench the question above to make sure I'm not missing something).

If I am NOT missing something, then I would really like this functionality to change/be added in VS9...

When you've finished creating your menus, you can actually back out of the process and "save." When you go back in, you'll find the menus are there.

I've done this by accident, and it works.

I've also lost my menus.

At one later point (can't quite remember when), we can "save" the menu file.

If you do a search, you'll find answers to this question.

(I notice that you say you edit a video, then click on Share and Create Disk. Are you working with .MPEG files?)

The menu gets saved with the project. I usually create the menu, then cancel the disk creation process, save the project, and then go back to the Create Disk stage.

One thing that doesn't get saved with the project, and which must be reselected when you re-enter the Create Disk wizard, are the DVD settings, such as the bit rate and compression settings.

Great info guys! I guess I should have searched this forum first. Sorry, I will next time.

On my next disc I will try backing out or cancelling the disk creation process and see if that saves the menus (I'm sure it does since you both said it does).

And to answer the other question, usually I am working with MPEG files. Other times though I am working with DV AVI's.

I have done what has been suggested above, that is, backed out and saved the project and then continue to burn the DVD. However, on the two occasions I have burnt a DVD and then had to go back into the project to make a small deletion to one clip the chapter/menus I had created have gone. This was after saving the change. (Note, if I open up the project without making changes the menus are still there. It appears that the menus are deleted as the clip deletion occurs.) As was asked at the start, is there some way of storing the menus with the project so any future editing still retains the menus?

What version of UVS do you have? My process works with UVS8 on my system, and I no longer have the previous version of UVS installed to try.

Start a new project.
Set the properties to match the settings you would use for burning.

From Share create disc.
Add video, your burner settings will match the project settings.
You should have NO need to alter any burner settings.

Create meuu’s and chapters.

Close the burner window and return back to the main preview screen.

SAVE your project as --my burner .vsp--, and close.

When you open the project again and return to share create disc ALL settings are intact, menu’s chapters and the burner properties required.

Hope This Helps Trevor (read my quick guide)

Hey, I can answer question instead of ask them for a change!

1) Using VS 8.0, create your menu.
2) In the left side of the menu frame, under the pulldown to select your template, click the "Customize" button.
3) Select another layout template if you want.
4) At the bottom of the window, there is a button that says "Add to Window Template." When you click this button, it will add your current menu to the Favorites templates.

It's even easier in DVD Workshop 2.0 where you can create a menu from scratch. There you can just right click and choose to add the current menu as a template.

Trevor

I did as you suggested with my VS8.01. I even went so far as replacing my title with yours (my burner.vsp) even though logically it shouldn't make any difference. However the same problem occurs.

After I had made the chapters and named them etc I saved the project, closed down VS and then restarted again. As I found before, and as you stated it would, the menus and chapters etc were all there as before.

HOWEVER, if I go anywhere into the project and cut/delete a couple of seconds of video (as I have done previously when noticing some unwanted frames) at the point of hitting the Delete key ALL my menus and chapters dissappear. All that is left is the default chapter (that is, the first frame).

This is the problem I have. How can I do some late editing after I have create the chapters and menus? Why does VS8.01 think that by doing some late editing I must want to delete all my menus too?

Is it possible for you to go into one of your previous projects, delete a few frames, and check if you have still retained your menus? Thanks for any help and suggestions.

I hope you understand that those original files ARE NEEDED. Project files are only 'a list of instructions' for Video Studio. They do not include the video or still photos. If you were to delete the original DV AVIs and then try to load a project, it wouldn't work.

Yup, I know you need the original files as well. :)

Good to clarify though.

Hi
The original question was

[quote=

JasonJoel[/quote]

And yes this is possible.

But if you return to the project and edit the timelines then the locations of all chapters and menus will have been moved out of position.
In this case you have to redo all menus and chapters.
