I recently purchased VideoStudio Pro X2. I inserted a video from a GoPro Hero helmet cam in .AVI format. I'm having problems with the A/V synchronization. If I view the project in CLIP mode the audio and video remain synchronized; however, when viewing in PROJECT mode, if I pause and re-start, the audio lags behind the video by several seconds. If I convert the .AVI format to .WMV format everything works fine.

Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong?

First previewing clips in your project is not a exact representation of how things will be in your video when it is rendered, it just gives you an idea. VS must put everything together "on-the-fly".

In Clip Mode you're basically just playing the clip that is on your system, while in Project Mode you are previewing edits, with overlays, audio, anything done. This is where things seem to go bad, even though they may not be. If you edit highly compressed video files, then you must have a very powerful PC to be able to preview these with any degree of smoothness. OOS (Out of Sync) may appear to be a problem while previewing, but may not be when your project is rendered to a video file.

You can use the High-Quality Playback (set this in the Preferences, press F6 to open it), and set up a Preview Range. VS will render a temp file, that will show what your project will look and sound like. I've used this on numerous occasions.

I suspect that you are editing some form of highly compressed video, such as DivX, or Xvid. Be patient while trying to edit and then finally when you render. These formats can take a very long time. Some times VS just gets along better with WMV, as it is not as compressed as others. The ideal format for editing is DV (avi). There are literally hundreds of codecs that are wrapped up in the AVI container, most are intended as the result or final product not as a format to be edited.

I'm having one other problem with my wife's Dell GX280 computer. I realize this is off-topic, but I'm hoping you might be able to shed some light on the issue since I've only had the problem while running VS.

When I insert a WMV file and try to view it, the program freezes and the computer shuts down. I get a message stating that a device driver is stuck in an infinite loop and it references nv4_disp. This even happens with the short WMV clips that came with VS. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the GeForce 6200 video card that I installed. I've installed all the updated drivers from the card manufacturer but the problem persists.

Have you ever heard of this type of problem when running VS? Any suggestions?

No I haven't, and as a matter of fact I have the same video card on my system, which is an old HP Pavilion a530n, with an AMD Athlon (64) XP 3200. You might need to download and install the Windows Media 9 Encoder Series, if you don't already have it installed.

For converting your video from one format to almost any other, try SUPER. It can convert DivX, Xvid or even MPEG4 files. I've even used it to not really convert files to another format, but ran MPEG-4 files that VS refused to load through it, saving to the same format, and then VS accepted it.

This problem with the video driver on the Dell machine has me confused. I also have an older Acer Aspire computer with an AMD Sempron processor and integrated video card, and that runs VS just fine, albeit a little slow. Go figure.
