Jog Slider not working properly

Post by ncb1221 »

Product Version: VS11

I am trying to trim video for a highlights video like I have made several times before, but this time the jog slider is giving me trouble. I have the video paused and I drag the slider to around the position I want to trim the video to. When I push play, it will play the video in the correct position, but the slider will go to the very beginning of the video. So if I try to pause on the exact spot I want to trim from, the video pauses where the slider is, at the very beginning of the video. I have this same problem when using the Mark In function. The video will start at the right position, but the slider will be at the beginning.

I am using .AVI files -- OpenDML

I converted them from .VRO from my dvd ram using autoGK, the same process I have used in the past, but without the above mentioned problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums,

First are you using DV (avi) or full uncompressed avi? There is a huge difference in file size. DV produces a video file of 13 gig per hour, whereas RAW avi produces a huge file size of 65 gig per hour. The latter while having the best quality, is virtually impossible to work with.

Next are you working in the Multi-Trim module or Editor Timeline? Both of course have similar controls, Jog Slider and Mark-In/Out.

This is very annoying, and I really don't know what causes this, or if it can be fixed. However I've learned to work with some of the keyboard shortcuts to get around this. For example [CTL] + Right or Left Arrow key scrolls the timeline. [CTL] + 1 switches to Project Mode, [CTL] + 2 switches to Clip Mode. How this works for me is I scroll to where I want to place a cue/chapter mark, make a cut, or mark-in. Next I manually place the Playhead at that point. This will automatically cause VS to change to Project mode, don't want that. So I press the shortcut keys for changing to Clip Mode, the playhead stays put, I can do what I need, and then move on. This would include playing from that position, which the keyboard shortcut to Play/Pause is the good ol' spacebar...;)

Thanks for your reply vidoman.

I'm not sure what kind of AVI it is, but a 30 minute clip is 1.25 gig.

Also, I'm using the editor timeline. I haven't really tried using the multi-trim yet.

I realized after posting that not only does the slider always move to the beginning every I press play or pause, but any time I'm in Clip mode instead of Project mode, the slider does not work at all. This makes it nearly impossible for me to trim the clips the way I want to as I can't stop the video anywhere except the beginning unless I'm in project mode.

30 min clip of DV should be about 6.5 gig, so you're working with some higher compressed video file, such as DivX, or Xvid. These are very difficult to work with due to their compression. They were not meant to be edited, just the final product for distribution. This may also explain why VS is having problems. I've tried to edit such formats a couple of times, and found it to be very frustrating.

Try using the shortcuts I mentioned above to see if they may help...

I tried using those shortcuts, but no luck. The slider always resets to the beginning of the video.

I checked and the videos are XviD compressed. The weird thing is, I tried opening a video I used in the past, and the same problem happened. I specifically remember using this software on those exact compressed videos without this problem.

I guess if I can't get it working in the next few days I'll try reinstalling the program.
