Hi,
I'm getting an error every time I try to save this DV file. I have over 100 GB on my drive and the movie is about 1 hour 30 minutes in length. I'm saving in DV format. I've tried the standard DV format in the software as well as Panasonic DV. It get to 99% then I get this message:
insufficient space on this drive. Save to another drive or reduce file size.
I've changed the temporary folders and working folders all to my drive with the most space (over 100 GB) I found this topic elsewhere, but that was the only info I got.
I've saved DV before with no problem. The only thing that is different with this file is I'm trying to save in 5.1 surround sound- could that be the problem? I'm saving PCM which appears to be the only audio codec that will support 5.1 Any ideas? Thanks!

Well...exactly how much space do you have left?

How much space have you reserved for a swap file? XP needs this.

DV AVI files take up a LOT of space.

When you say "DV format" do you mean DV-AVI? Are you sure?

I say that because uncompressed DV is about 65 GB per hour (with DV-AVI being about 13 GB per hour). For a project of 1 hour and 30 minutes using uncompressed DV that would be about 100 GB.

Thanks for the replies.
Sorry, I don't know what swap files are. I should have clarified too, I'm saving in DV-avi. I've tried the default in ulead, canopus and panasonic DV. I have 120 GB on my drive. In the past, saving in this format gave me 13 GB per hour, so I thought I would have plenty of space. Any ideas? Thanks so much for all the help

I'm attempting to save the same file on my other hard drive that has 250 GB free. I'll let you know what I find out...

Just attempted to save on my drive with 250 GB free... it gets to 99% then gives me the SAME MESSAGE... I'm about to lose my mind. Any ideas how I can remedy this or what the problem might be? Thanks again for all the replies.

Doing a defrag of the drives may help and I'd also run error checking on hte drives, just to be certain.
It'll give you something to do whilst the VS experts rack their brains anyway!!

Are the drives internal or external?
If external how are they connected?

Try renaming the project (just so you don't lose the one you've got) then cut it down to 5 mins in length and see if you get the error message on saving. Then if that works try going to 30 mins and then an hour.

Go through the project with a fine toothcomb, make sure you haven't got any duplications, overlaps of video that shouldn't or gaps or 5 hours down the timeline a very short clip which you hadn't noticed, so you are in fact saving a 5 hour video!!! I've done it and I bet others have as well.

How long does it take to get to the point at which it fails?

What file types are on the timeline?

Do you have multiple effects on any clips?

That's about all I can think of currently.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran a 5 minute test this morning- and it WORKED... I fully expected it not to. I'm now running a 45 minute trial.

I'm working on all external drives connected by USB. My internal drives are too small for this type of work. I've successfully rendered DV-avi files in the past on these drives- even larger than the one I'm currently working on. The file in the timeline is a DV-avi file. Basically what I'm doing is dragging the DV-avi into the timeline, then selecting YES I want to change the project settings to match. This file has no audio. Then I take 5.1 ac3 audio and drag it into the audio portion of the timeline. I then go to save, I go to options, and everything is exactly how I want it except the audio is PCM 2 channel, so I change it to PCM 5.1. I render, it gets to 99%, then the message...

I have no effects, no overlaps, no nothing. It's fairly simple since I'm keeping one whole file in the same format- just changing the audio. I'm completely baffled.

1 hour 20 minutes gives me the insufficient space... When I rendered 45 minutes, it was LESS than 13 GB. Any idea what's going on? Thanks again for all the responses.

You external drives...are they formatted in FAT32 or NTFS formats?
