Rotating clips and avoiding stretching

X2, 16:9 clip (AVCHD from Canon HF100)
After using rotate option (Arrow 90 button on Edit panel), clip is hopelessly distorted (stretched sideways). Any way to keep its proportions?

There may be something different with the AVCHD format. I took a 16:9 clip I had shot, that was SD, and placed it in an overlay track and rotated it. It did not distort the clip. This was both with using Keep Aspect Ratio selected and without. My Project Settings were set to 16:9 too. You might check to see that your Project Settings are 16:9 and not 4:3..

The camera was rotated during recording, which may be the cause of the stretching, not VS. Since the aspect ratio of the video clip is 16:9, it may have been stretched to fit the 16:9 ratio. I don't have any video clips that were shot with the camera rotated to test this.
Can you confirm that you have Keep Aspect Ratio checked, that your Project Settings match the 16:9 aspect ratio of your Video Clip?

Here is clip just before rotating:
Indeed it was shot with camera rotated. Proportions are OK.
As you can see on the first image, the clip wasn't just stretched to fit by VS.
Image resampling option in Preferences is set to Keep aspect ratio (I think it rather refers to images, not clips). Project settings are 16:9, as you may notice by size of checkered area.
