Transparent favicon?

Post by kingtech »

Using PhotoImpact 12, is it possible to make an .ico file with a transparent background?

Well so far since reading your post, I've not been able to create a favicon having a transparent background. You can create favicons using PI 12. Make sure that your image is 16 x 16 and using only 16 (4-bit) colors. Then you need to save it as favicon.ico.

Thanks vidoman. I've been making favicon's for years with PI but thought it would be nice to be able to make them transparent since most browsers now support it.

Another question, same topic. Does PI 12 allow you to save multiple icons in an .ico? I've discovered that this is one of the beautiful things about .ico's ... that you can save multiple sizes of icons within one .ico file for purposes of having 48x48, 32x32 and 16x16 favicons all in one package.

The best thing I've found for multiple icon files is a free program called AveIconifier2. Drag and drop a PNG file, and that's it. Transparency? This will do it, if your initial PNG file has a transparent background.

There isn't much of a user interface at all, no help, no menu, but it works great. http://www.vistaicons.com/download/i20/ ... ifier2.htm

Wow that one does work well, thank you! Yesterday I found a program called Icollator.jar (a Java application) but it was very clunky and produced poor results. Thanks again for the help on this.
