How do I prevent captured clips going into to the timeline as well as the library.I only want them in the library to start with ...........Ken

You can prevent the captured clips from being placed in the Library, but not the timeline. However if you don't want them in the timeline, once you're finished capturing, just highlight them in the timeline and press [Delete].
There is another option of using a third-party capture program like the free capture utility called WinDV. It works with Firewire only, and captures DV. Once you have transferred/captured your clips, then open VS, go to the Library where you want your clips, and link to them. However if you're not transferring/capturing using firewire and DV, then this would not be an option.
