Lack of Sound and also updating problems with Video DVD Make

I purchased USB 2.0 Video Capture Creator with Audio - Video DVD Maker a few days ago and it is marked as being suitable for Vista. I use it on a USB port of my Laptop running Vista Home Premium SP1 and am able to capture my VCR players output or my TV's output OK when it is set for Composite Video. My problem as I see with others looking around here is that there is no sound when it is played back from a DVD or directly on the laptop.
Using Control panel and sound/recording I see USB Audio Interface working.
Thinking that an update may help I downloaded UVS10_VistaPatch_5in1.exe (42Mb) update from Corel for version 10 of Ulead VideoStudio and ran it.
It says "Can't find VideoStudio 10 on your machine".

If I use Help/About when my VideoStudio is running it says Ulead VideoStudio ver 10.0.0110.0 SE DVD. The notes are dated 2006 March 26th.
Is it possibly that this is a "stripped" version it won't recognise?

Any advice on my problem most welcome.

Welcome to the forums,

First your VS 10 is an SE version, not a full or trial version. It may have been tweaked by the hardware manufacturer that included it with their product. Patches/fixes will not install to SE, VE, or TBYB versions. You must have a full registered version in order to install them. Since VS 10 was developed prior to the release of Vista, it was not compatible. Corel did release the Vista patch for it.

Now another bad point is that with the Vista patch, it takes away the former Video For Windows (VFW) or DirectShow capture plug-in, replacing it with their own IVI. The IVI has problems allowing video capture from analog devices, as well as refusing to allow analog-digital conversion captures.

Finally if the audio in your video clip is using Dolby, then you will not be able to hear or encode with Dolby. Dolby charges a fee to use their technology. Companies like Corel will not provide this with the free versions. You can download a free decoder so that you can at least hear the audio, but will not be able to encode to AC3. Thanks very much for a prompt and informative reply.
Whilst I didn't know what SE meant ( first time with Ulead/Corel products) I was suspecting as much.I had read somewhere here about the Dolby situation but I don't think that's my problem I forgot to mention that recording directly from the TV gives the same result and I don't think they would use Dolby - or would they?
I may try another product, VirtualDub which is free for comparison.
