Downloaded VS12 for trial and program will not open.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled with the same results: program will not open.

Any ideas.

When did you first download and install it? There is a 30 day limit on Trials. Once you have installed it, the clock starts ticking, giving you up to 30 days. There are some things that may trigger a built in anti-piracy protection, which can stop the trial early, one is if you had to reset your clock/calendar on your PC. VS will treat this as an attempt to circumvent the trial...

The only way around this is to reformat your harddrive. You might also look at the possibility of D.E.P. Sometimes this will prevent programs from running. To Exempt a program from DEP do the following:

1. Right-click on My Computer and Select Properties
2. In the System Properties dialogue that opens click on the Advance Tab.
3. Click on the Settings button for Performance.
4. In the Performance Options, click on the 3rd tab, Data Execution Prevention.
5. Click the radio button for Turn on DEP for all.....
6. Click on the Add button, a window will open that you can navigate to where the executable file for VS, MSP, PI or whatever program you're having problems with, is located. Generally this is found under C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\. However you may have it installed to some other location on your system.
7. Once you have found it, click on it to add it to the execeptions list.

Now if DEP was preventing your program from launching that should take care of it.

Problem seems to be with installation.

VS12 installs itself on C in Program Files in a Corel folder. However, VS12 installs itself in Registry as Ulead Systems, Corel folder in the Registry is empty. It doesn't open because the shortcut refers to c/program files/corel and the registry does not have it there.

I have only used 4 days of the trial and on first install it did work. I removed it when I thought it would not work with Canon HG10. Since found a work-around.

The registry key for VideoStudio 12 is here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0\Installer

You will find a string value named "Path" which should point to the installation which is
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 12\

If you install the trial version then uninstall it. If you install it again the trial period starts from the first install date! Otherwise you could just uninstall when the 30 days is nearly up. Re-install and start from day one again!
By the way you dont need a workaround to get the software to recognise your camera. See the post link above. This item is covered in Page 60 of the manual for the software!!!

Yes, I understand that a trial period starts from the 1st day of installation, no matter how many times you uninstall/reinstall. The problem is that when reinstalled, the program will NOT open. When you click on the desktop icon, nothing happens. If you right click the icon and select OPEN, nothing happens. Something is simply not right. When doing the reinstall, which has been attempted numerous times in an effort to get it to work, the installation "skips" the window where it asks for a license number or "continue with trial". Very strange.

Thanks for pointing me to the explanation for getting my files from the hard drive of the camera.

Try this . Go to start. My Computer. Double click your "C" drive. Look for Program files, Double click "Corel", then "Corel VideoStudio 12" Then scroll down and find the file vstudio.exe. Double click that file and the program should open. If it does then all it means is that when you double click your desktop icon a DLL is missing and it it not connecting. Remember the icon is only a link to this exe file. If you then delete the icon on your desktop. Follow the above procedure again but this time right click on the exe file and choose "Create shortcut" this will produce a file right at the end of the list called "Shortcut to vstudio.exe" Drag this to a blank space on your desktop and double clicking that icon should open the program.

I think what has happened here is that with numerous uninstalls/re-installs lots of odd "bits" have been left behind in the registry. There is, of course, a manual way of removing these legacies but it does mean going into the registry via "regedit". This is OK providing you know exactly what you are doing. One false step and all is lost, literally. The first thing that is essential is to make a backup of the registry before you start. If you are not sure how to do that then you shouldn't really be in the Registry!
There is a very good piece of software called Perfect Uninstall (is it OK to mention other software?) that will check for all left over files on uninstall. It's not free but it is a better bet than taking a chance in the registry, IMHO.
One more point, I found it much better to completely uninstall the trial copy of VS and then do a complete clean install of the licenced version. I bought the boxed copy so I got an actual disc, good for reinstalling in the future as I fairly frequently format my hard drive as a matter of course. You also get a really good printed manual. I have put a plain cover on mine and that way I can read it in bed pretending to my wife that it is a light novel
