I'm making a new DVD in VS X2 Pro (with the latest update) and am using the procedure that I've always used. That is, all of my videos for the DVD have been done in separate projects and are rendered with the same settings as I will use on the DVD.
I then started a new project and went right to the Share tab to start the DVD wizard. However, when I add my videos to the project, I can't get them to show up in the preview window on the 1st page of the wizard, which means that I can't use the slider to select a frame in the video to use with the "Change Thumbnail" option. Since most of these videos start by fading in from black, the thumbnail is just a black frame!
What's going on? This always worked in previous versions. I've tried clicking and dbl-clicking the thumbnails on the wizard page, but the preview window remains greyed out.
Other than this, the project was created and burned to DVD-RW successfully, but it's sure not the way I want the final version to look.
ETA: I still have VS 11.5 installed. I just tried it there and it works as expected. So if I can't figure out why it doesn't work in X2, I can always fall back to 11.5.
Can't set clip thumbnail in DVD Wizard

I am not completely sure what you are doing, though on one reading, it sounds completely right. Anyway I just tested this myself (though have not experienced any difficulty before). I am assuming here you are talking about the icon for the Main menu and not the Chapter menu icons.
Anyway, I just opened X2 and went straight to Share > Create Disc > DVD to open the burning module (which is what I am assuming you mean by 'DVD wizard'). I then chose three videos stored on my computer, at random. They included one standard definition mpg, one HDV, and one AVCHD clip, and inserted them in the burning timeline. The SD mpg showed its first frame in the preview window immediately I clicked on it. But both high def clips took 3 - 5 seconds to show the first frame when I clicked on them.
Now you say your videos all start with a fade from black. So here is where I am slightly confused. When you say something is grayed out, do you mean the preview window and slider itself when you click on one of the clips in the 'timeline'? Or do you mean 'change thumbnail' remains grayed out when you right click on the clip itself?
In my experiment, after I selected a clip, 'change thumbnail' remained grayed out until I actually dragged the slider under the preview screen to the right. Once I had moved to a new area in the clip, I could then right click on the clip in the timeline and 'change thumbnail' is now highlighted.
In other words, I am just wondering if you are actually getting a live slider, but have not moved it first from its open black frames, and *then* go back to the timeline and select 'change thumbnail'...

Sorry I wasn't more clear. When I click on a clip in the timeline, the preview window remains black and all the controls in the preview window are greyed out. This also happens with clips that do have a real picture as the first frame, so it's not that I'm seeing the initial black frame.
And of course the Change Thumbnail option is also greyed out since I can't move the slider. It definitely works OK in 11.5, as within a second or two of selecting the clip in the timeline, the preview window goes "live" as expected.
Since this is apparently not a known problem, I'll play around with it a bit more before giving up. Maybe a reinstall would fix things...

Wouldn't hurt to also update your DirectX.

Well, even a full removal and reinstallation didn't fix it, so I'll go back to 11.5+ for this work.
This was also the first (and last!) time that I bought an update via download and didn't get the full retail package with CD-ROMs. Yes, it should be the same package, but I recall other issues that people have had in the past with the downloaded version not quite matching the CD version.
In any case, I don't see myself doing much if any video editing in the future after a couple more planned projects, so it's probably a moot point and I'll be off the VS product-cycle merry-go-round shortly.
