XP or VISTA
I will shortly be in the progress of upgrading my PC, I plan to use VS X2 Pro and get some type of quad core to handle HD editing, my question is which OS is better suited to handle my needs from a VS/video editing perspective, XP or VISTA? any particular versions(s), add-ons etc?
From what I've heard VISTA is 'buggy'

Not so much buggy as it is a memory hog.
I find that my laptop with 2GB RAM (That's the maximum my laptop will take) is a bit sluggish with Vista Home Premium. I have however created a dual boot with XP and it flies along much much faster.
The replacement for Vista is in Beta Version and will be out later this year.
Windows 7.
There ARE some good things in Vista - I like the Media Centre, another thing that is more powerful in Vista is the EXIF information when you view your pictures in Windows Explorer in "Details" View.

I doubt windows 7 will be out this year, vista is not really buggy, and as with any other programme, VS included the more you get it to do, the more resources it will take up
As you're building a new good spec pc for hd editing, I'd say go for vista, but if you have a lot of "old" programmes you are going to install on your new pc, you may like to do as Steve has done (as do I) and have a dual boot system.

Whilst Office 2003 does work with Vista there are a few minor problems.
One is if you use Outlook - on Vista it fails to remember your password and so every time you want to check your email you must enter it manually.
The few annoyances are not that great and you need to decide for yourself if it is worthwhile upgrading to Office 2007.

But Babdi, the question is whether Office 2003 works like a whistle, not 2007.
And thanks Steve -- I wasn't aware of that quirk with Outlook 2003 and Vista. The only computer on which I had Vista Home Premium and originally Office 2003 had Windows Mail and so I used that just to see how that successor to Outlook Express worked...

Password Problems with Outlook 2003 and Vistaskier-hughes wrote:I didn't have that problem, so did a quick google search and it does seem popular, but not millions of hits, so I wonder if it's just some people who are having trouble with it??

Well, I took the plunge, purchased a new PC, Q9400 2.66GHz, 4G RAM
VISTA home premium, 1T HD, 20x DVD burner, firewire, 22' LCD, graphics card (the details of which slip my mind at this moment). The PC vendor recommended VISTA as it was "optimised for the Q9400 chip".
I installed my existing MS office 2003 without issue, seems to be functioning fine, Outlook works, copied across all my data, seems to be all okay (so far).
I have order X2 Pro Box on-line, should arrive in 3-5 days.
Next Step, the HDD camera......
