Recently i converted an mkv movie into DVD compliant mpeg file using a 3rd party converter. I do not think vs supports this file natively. The resulting size was 4.1 GB.

I then launched VS to author the file whcih showed an mpeg optiization of 100% (after all it was a dvd compliant mpeg file). After choosing and creating menus the output authored DVD file size showed 5.2 GB. HOW?
Is this because VS increased the bitrate?

So, i decrease the bitrate so that the bar showed that the output file (with menu and title overheads) was 4.2 GB (sinfle DVD 5 size)

However, after crating the DD file on my local disc the file size was merely 3.1 GB only (So why should i have had to lower the bitrate anyways). The titiel and menu overheads are surely not more than 300 MB max

How dis this happen? Was it some change from CBR (of original file) to 2 pass VBR (current file) so as to lose the extra padded bits or is this just a shortfasll on part of VS to calculate accurately the size of the outrput authored file??

When I am not sure if the DVD is going to fit or not, I "Burn" the DVD to a hard drive folder rather than a disc. I can then see for myself the final size of the completed DVD and burn that folder with burning software of my own choice.

If it turns out to be "well over" then I would adjust the bit rates.
If it was only slightly over I would probably cheat and use DVD shrink.

I don't know why Video Studio sometimes mis-calculates file size... Maybe it doesn't know in advance what average bitrate it's going to use... If I recall correctly, you choose a maximum bitrate when you select VBR.

Make sure that your empty project properties match your video properties before Share Create Disc.

From the burner module:-
The capacity bar indicates the size expected on disc. That is assuming VS renders the video to the settings under the ¡¥options¡¦ cogwheel. These settings reflect the project property settings by default. (assuming they are Mpeg compatible files)

Make sure that ¡¥do not convert compliant Mpeg files¡¦ is correctly set. (by default ---- checked) (the indicator should show the video size)

If you had this unchecked then VS would use the project properties to render the video prior to burning a disc.

This is indicated by first showing ¡¥Convert Title¡¦ from the progress bar after hitting the Burn Button.


I have just burned a full dvd, VS indicated / suggested not enough room on disc ¡Vdo you want to continue---with any size above 4 GB. That¡¦s any yellow indicator. I am sure it would have fit but to be sure I re-rendered one of the files just to be sure.
