If any one is interested here are some quotes from previous posts going back to 2004 :-

Has anyone seen the "Load from stream error" in Video Studio 8? It started when I was deleting a number of previews from my library and got blank white boxes in place of each preview. They appeared one at a time each followed by the "Load from stream error" and an "OK" box which allows another white box with an x in it to appear. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the Ulead Video Studio 8 program but now the program won't install. Any ideas?
I went to
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\8.0
and Deleted the file VS_Image.dat
Note my blank squares were in the Image library.VS8 recreated the file when I restarted it BUT without the old image struture I had.
to clear the "load from stream" error you need to unistall UVS completely including a number of hidden files, if you can no longer use the "uninstall" option then you will have to delete all the VideoStudio Files manually,
First go to Control Panel >> Folder Options >> View and make sure that "Show hidden files and Folders" is selected. If you have no other Ulead products then do a search of your hard drive for 'Ulead' and delete everything it finds - if you have other Ulead products then carefully check that the files you are deleting belong to VideoStudio. Then run any registry cleanup programme you have - for instance "Norton Win Doctor" to tidy up your registry.
You should then be able to do a clean re-install and hopefully your problem will have gone.
yes, I had the same problem. Close Ulead. Goto My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options and select "View". Select the "Show hidden files and folders" option and uncheck the "Hide operating system files (Recommended). The in My Computer click "C:" goto "Documents And Settings" -> "Administrator" (same as your logon name) -> "Local Settings" -> "Application Data" -> "Ulead Systems" -> "Ulead VideoStudio" -> "8.0" folders and delete the VS_Video.DAT (eg) file, reopen Ulead and the thumbnails should reset back to the default thumbnails when the program was installed. took me 4 days to work it out!

Well we've had "load from stream error" problems reported before but I don't recall anyone else reporting the blank thumbnail bit as well - so your problem could be slightly different but here are two different methods that have worked for people in the past.
Method 1
If you don want to lose all your custom directories or the pointers to all your video, image, audio, and titles, do the following: (Note: The file system path is valid for Windows XP Home. If you have another operating system, the file system path may be different.)
1. Save the contents of the following directory in a Temporary directory: :\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\8.0? Then Delete that 8.0 Folder
2. Delete the :\Documents and Settings\ALL USERS\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\8.0?folder.
3. Uninstall Video Studio 8.
4. Install Video Studio 8.
5. Restore your custom Library directories and pointers to your clips as follows: Copy the following files from your saved directory ?.0?
VS_Video.dat,
VS_Title.dat,
VS_Image.dat, and
VS_Audio.dat
and paste them into
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\8.0.
IMHO, the way to prevent this problem in the future is to turn off Write Caching (when editing with Video Studio) as follows: Control Panel/System/Hardware tab/Device Manager/{double click on a disk drive to open Properties window}/Policies tab/{uncheck nable Write caching on the disk?
Method 2
Have you tried this: ?works for some
1) Clean up C:\Windows\temp directory. Clean up all files in C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Temp folder. Uninstall VideoStudio 8 from control panel Add/Remove programs.
2) Delete folder {4F1DA6BF-3614-48A1-9970-9E90F646789E} in
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (Please set "Show hidden files and folders." in folder option in OS)
3) Delete the folder " Ulead VideoStudio 8.0" folder in C:\program
files\ulead system
4) Run Regedit from Start/Run in Windows task bar
5) Delete folder {4F1DA6BF-3614-48A1-9970-9E90F646789E} in
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
6) Then reinstall it and any patches.

Close Video Studio
Your library files are here:-
C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\9.0
The video library file is called VS_Video.dat
The image library file is called VS_Image.dat
And so on..........
If you re-name the video file to say Copy VS_Video.dat
Then start Video Studio 9
The library file will be recreated as new.
Your Video library section should show the default thumbnails.
If all is well delete the copy VS_Video.dat
