I am new to VS and spent 6 to 8 hours editing a captured analog video (thru Pinnacle Dazzle DVC 100 - Instant DVD Recorder).

I even purchased the seeitdoit VS tutorial videos because I didn't want to spend hours going in circles. Although the video series is quite good - I seem to be missing some of the basics.

I have cut the captured analog video and placed it on the timeline and put in titles and transitions, but now I want to change the sequence of the clips along with the associted titles and transitions. I turned on ripple edit (thinking that is what I needed to do) but if I drag a clip and try to move it I don't get what I want. I have searched and cann't seem to find anything about moving clips once they are on the timeline.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

once you have placed titles it can be very tricky to move clips around and maintain the timing of the titles.

Here is an idea. Render the project into another Mpeg2 clip and then the titles will be permanently affixed to the video. Then place your new clip into the timeline and cut it where you want and move it around.

Don't know if this will work for your project, but it's an idea

While the idea above has some merit you lose a lot of flexibility.

Ripple editing doesn't work for what you are trying to do.

I can't say I have tried it but try Ctr-Click both the clip and the title. You will lose the transition but it's unavoidable when separating clips joined by a transition.

In future follow the tabs as set out above. Capture, Edit, Effects, Overlay, then Titles. Not going to the next stage until you are happy with that step. As you have discovered making big changes in later stages is almost like starting again.

If you using VS 12, try dragging titles to Title track 2 (click on first title, hold shift key & click on last one), Move them outside time line of clip, move your clip, then drag titles to new place. If there are no titles in way of new position, you do not need second title track. I haven¡¦t done this in a while but it should work

The cntl - click didn't work - I had already tried that - Bob's suggestion sounded the best but I had already copied the video clips and titles from the timeline and pasted them in video folders orr title folders and then inserted them where I wanted them. Then I deleted the clips that I didn't want (in a particular time) It took more time than I wanted to burn up but it worked.

I guess I use to word processors and spreadsheets that one can cut (or copy) and paste at will. This whole process seemed totally convoluted.

I could copy but I could not paste into the tmeline I had to first either put items into the video folder or title folder.

Again I am new at this so there probably is better ways, it just wasn't obvious to me.

One more thought. Before doing anything you should drag all of your titles up to the library. That will preserve them in length, text and attributes in case you decide to scuttle the title track in order to redo the video editing you can save a bunch of work recreating your titles. Then you can just reinsert the titles later by dragging them back down to the title track, making only minor adjustments instead of starting from scratch.

Even though ripple editing is probably no use in the situation you find yourself in with this particular project, it is worthwhile reading how it works now so that you will be better prepared for your next project.
