I often edit TV shows recorded on a DVD recorder. I import the footage from the DVD into a VS project and use VS to cut out the commercials.

I see no difference in performance between VS12 and VS11.5 when doing this.

However, on the two occasions I've had to capture the shows to DV avi, VS12 on my desktop pc (P4 2.8c 1.5GB RAM) with DV avi files in the timeline seems much less responsive than VS11.5 on my laptop (C2D 1.8Ghz, 2GB RAM)

Without installing VS11.5 back to my desktop pc, I can't really tell if the difference is caused by the pc, so I wonder if there are any users out there with both versions on the same pc, that could check it out.

On my desktop pc, when I'm adjusting the position of the cursor, I usually fine tune it when I've got close to the point I need to make my edit by stepping thru frame by frame, using the timeline in the preview window. With mpeg2 files on the timeline, the response is instantaneous.

With DV avi files on the timeline, however, there is a noticeable lag.

On the laptop, in VS11.5 and with DV avi files on the timeline, there is no lag, and I can advance frame by frame as fast as I can hit the mouse button.

Since there's no great cpu usage involved, and the hard discs on my desktop are significantly faster than the one in my laptop, I wonder if this is a problem with VS12.

I've also noticed a performance problem with X2, especially when using multiple video tracks. Version 10 handled the same without problems.

By timeline in the preview window, do you mean the jog slider just below the preview window, the Next,Previous buttons, the digital clock, or the timeline itself? I've tried each, in both 11 and 12, and the only difference noted was in 12, while clicking on the timeline. It appeared as if I was missing the "hot-spot" so moved my mouse slightly and clicked again, then the preview window updated. This was on my desktop (XP) AMD Athlon. Haven't tried it on my laptop which is a Vista Duo Core.

I could have explained it better!

I get close to where I want to make my cut by moving the slider whilst in timeline view. I then click on the frame number which is at the right-hand end of the timecode showing on the bottom right of the preview window, which causes it to flash, denoting it is "active". I can then navigate frame by frame either by clicking on the up or down arrows to the right of the timecode, or by using the keyboard up or down arrows.

But with VS12, with DV avi clips on the timeline, there seems to be noticeable lag both when moving the slider and also using the up or down arrows.

When you describe something that seems to be as if you're "missing the hotspot", maybe you are experiencing some lag too.

Incidentally, it's funny that we both have faster laptops than our trusty old desktops - sounds like we need a birthday present this year!
