Runtime error. ProX2. Vista.

I've been working on a new project most of the day and now find that when I try to play the VSP file (i.e. not a rendered file) it crashes with the dreaded "runtime error" message. It is not crashing at the same point in the file - sometimes it will play for 40 seconds, sometimes 50, sometimes something more or less than those.

So far I have:
1. Tried re-installing VS ProX2 (still get the same problem)
2. Re-captured the DV tape (still get the same problem)
3. Tried playing a different VSP file that was playing just fine only a couple of weeks ago (now get the same problem and the same Runtime error message)
4. Downloaded the latest version of ActiveX (same problem)

I have not installed any new software (other than ActiveX).

Have read in the forum that I might need to uninstall VS but not using the standard tool in the Control Panel to make sure everything is removed. If this is the next logical step can someone point me to a file that tells me how to do this?

Any other suggestions? It's driving me mad!!

There is usually a code number with that runtime error message. You can then look it up on the Microsoft website for clues.

The most common problems are system registry corruptions.

You could also try a System Restore to a point when all was working well.

Clevo: there is no code number with the runtime error message. Just a reference to "C++ Runtime Library" and the blurb about "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way".
There may well be a system registry corruption but the idea of touching the registry fills me with horror. Last time I tried to download and run a registry clean-up everything went to hell and I ended up with a complete rebuild and a bill for 300 pounds!

Black Lab: System Restore sounded like a great idea but I have just discovered that no restore points were set on my computer

I've continued playing around and, so far as I can tell, VSP files that were playing perfectly well when I created and worked on them a month ago are now crashing when I play them.

More ideas, please. I am desperate to fix this!!!

Have tried a 'clean install' using the instructions posted on the Corel website but still getting the same problem.

Have also noticed that when playing back an edited VSP file (before it crashes) things seem sluggish. The previes screen is initially jerky and then gets smoother, also the programme is slow to respond during editing (such as selecting or moving a clip). This was not happening before and my computer kit has plenty of power and available memory.

Just to make the puzzle even more intriguing I have also noticed that VSP files that contain only Standard Def (AVI) clips seem to play without a problem. It is only my High Def (mpeg2) clips that cause the error message and crash. This pushes me to think that maybe some of my HD files are corrupt but this would not explain why all my High Def VSP files were playing just fine but now crash with the Runtime Error message.

I did notice a couple of Vista automatic updates when I closed down a couple of days ago. Could they have caused the problem?

Well, your clips used to play, now they don't. So, something changed. What?

That's why I suggested a System Restore. Try uninstalling the updates and see what happens.

See my earlier posting - System Restore is not possible.
Anyway, if the problem was caused by Automatic Updates surely the System Restore solution would only be temporary as the Microsoft updates will presumably automatically install themselves again!

Then turn off automatic updates. If an update is causing the problem you will have to determine which one and make sure that one isn't installed.

Ah - so you mean I can manually uninstall the automatic updates! Good point!

Going to try that right now.

And, yes, I will set a restore point as soon as I can get this thing fixed. Lesson learned.

Just make sure when you go to Add/Remove Programs that you check the Show Updates box.

Try right clicking the shortcut/icon and "run as administrator" if that doesn;t help try running it in XP compatability mode.

If these don;t work then I think what you have is a conflict caused by the last update.

I've uninstalled all recent updates except for one; '2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1)' which was an automatic install that gives me no uninstall option when it is selected.
I followed this with another Clean Install of VS.
I still get the same problem and error message.

I've tried running VS as administrator and the problem is still there.
I'd like to try the XP compatability idea but don't know how to do that. Can you give me a clue?

Yes, I believe I've done a clean uninstall/reinstall. I followed the process on the Corel website including running Windows Clean-up and specific registry deletions.

I found the XP compatability application and...........IT SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED! I've been playing with (editing/running) the most problematic VSP clip for almost 30 minutes and it's been stable.

So. firstly, BIG THANKS to you and the rest of the forum team. Don't know what I'd do without you (well, I do actually, I'd switch to another product if this forum didn't exist).

But secondly, WHY? Having worked on Vista for more than two years and found it pretty stable, what the heck is going on? Why does my version of VS12 Pro run on XP compatible but not on Vista? I feel like I've got some kind of workaround solution here (and I really do thank you for that) but if feels like something is fundamentally wrong that this is a solution.

Thoughts?

As I've said in the past, it's a lot easier to find a work-around than it is to find the reason why it broke.
