Alludo USER to USER Web Board

Hey,

So i recently bought an easycap to transfer my vhs to dvd, the included software was Ulead VideoStudio SE DVD, but i keep getting an error when I try to record.

It records for a random amount of time and then the error box comes up saying Unexpected error, Unspecified error, the preview screen goes black, and, of course, it stops recording. I click "OK" on the error box, the preview screen comes back up and it comes up with another similar error box. (pics below).

The first time I got through 40 mins of the movie and nothing happened, but it was recording at 1gb per minute so i ran out of space on my hard drive.
I fixed that and then tried again, and this is where maybe 8 minutes in I got the error.
I restarted my computer and tried again, this time i got through about an hour before I got the error.
I tried again and only got trough about a minute and a half.

As i said, I've got Ulead VideoStudio SE DVD, in My Computer it says the easycap is Syntek STK1160
I'm running Windows XP Professional SP3. Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 1GB of RAM. Recording NTSC.
I'm also dual-booting with Ubuntu Linux as my second operating system, but that shouldn't do anything right?

Any ideas?

Doing a Google search for STK1160 I got a bunch of hits, mostly of people complaining about their "EasyCrap" as they put it. This particular post seems to point to some fixes.

Analog capture is tricky, and the "cheap" capture devices can be trouble. (Well... Just about everything about digital video can be tricky).

If you can't get this thing to work, check out Hauppauge or ATI/AMD. If you get one of these, use the software that comes with it for the capture step. Once you have a digital file on your hard drive, you can use Video Studio or any other software of your choice for editing and creating DVDs.

I think the ATI All-In-Wonder cards are the most popular. I have a Hauppauge capture card, and it works great with the supplied capture software. The only bad thing about it is that it's MPEG only (I think the EazyCap is also). It can't capture to the (less compressed) DV/AVI, which is easier to edit (less trouble prone) than the more compressed formats.
