VS 10+ blank preview screen problem

H E L P !!!!
Does VS10+ use a different method/codec for displaying "clip" and "project" views?
The reason I ask is that I have some MPEG-2 video imported to my library.
- If I view it in the library or drop it into a project and hit the play button, I get a blank preview screen with sound.
- If I drop it into the time line and then click on "Project" and then play I can see the video and hear the sound.
- If I hold the mouse arrow on the Jog Slider and hold down right arrow, I can see the video but no sound...
None of these are optimum when it comes to editing the clips!!
I have check and I am on Directx 10,I also have the "Instant playback" and "Target Preview Window" options selected.
I have similar issues viewing AVI files but ticking the "Display DV timecode on Preview Window" seems to fix this...
Am I doing something stupid or is VS10+ playing up?
Please don't tell me to reload the software as I'm halfway through editing a large holiday collection and do not want to start again!
cheers,
Daran.
