VS10+ closing down after loading project

Hi Chris

Sorry for the delay in replying to your post.

First of all using your work-round the option to start a VSP seems to work well.
This has allowed me to continue editing, but still get the shut down occasionally.

A System Restore made no difference.
I have done a lot of uninstalling and reinstallations, not just VS but other programs.

I am sure it is a conflict of some sorts.

Anyhow whilst trying to burn the latest project caused the program to close.
This made it very hard to continue as there is no means of saving whilst in the burner module.
Ok so I tried VS 9 and to my surprise experienced the same problem. That closed as well.

So its not just VS 10 but probably all versions.

Now something strange happened this morning, I opened VS 10 and a project.
Minimised the program to the tool bar to allow me to view my E-Mails, when Microsoft Outlook opened VS 10 closed during the send and receive. Very strange!

My next thought is to do a repair on my operating system, practically re-installing XP.
But first I am gonna check further into my installed programs.
Nero 7, Office 2007, Msn-v14 etc.

Can you e-mail me details of your pc¡¦s installed programs and their versions, if they are the same then we may be able to track down any conflict.

I am sure you haven¡¦t fixed this as you would have posted.

Other ideas welcome.

Hi Chris,

I skipped through the replies to your initial post so hope that this has not been mentioned before.

Firstly welcome to the vagaries of VS v10. I bought version 10 when it came out and after many frustrating hours of having to reload projects due to never ending crashes etc I went back to version 9 and have not had a crash since.

Have you tried downloading a trial version of the latest of Videostudio and see if you can load the project with the new version (I think that projects are upward compatible with later version of VS - someone please advise if I am wrong)?
If the project will load ok with the latest version then the problem could be in the project file.
Do you have a older backup of the project - does that work ok?
Do you have any other projects? If so do they load ok?

I commiserate with you as I know the frustrations.

Not sure if you require the features of version 10 but version 9 is very similar (in features) to version 10 (version 10 has more overlay tracks but everything else is fairly similar in features). If version 9 will suit I suggest you looking on Ebay as often older versions are listed for sale both used and new (or version 11 but not sure if later versions are as stable as 9).

Hi John
thanks for the reply...
I have a number of projects, some old & some new, all of which have the same problem.
I still have my old copy of VS9 which I could try again, but Trevor has tried going back & is still having the problem.
I have not tried downloading the latest trial yet.
I think my next thing will be to try removing some other programs to see if that helps - although unless I can do a 'clean' uninstall I suspect it won't.

I begin to wonder if it's one of the auto updates which has caused a conflict

After reading Trevor's problem with VS9 and 10 closing after opening MS Outlook to check emails, I decided to try and see if I might have a similar problem. I started with opening VS10+ and the Sample NTSC project. After minimizing it, and opening my email client, Mozilla Thunderbird, VS10 closed.

So next I opened VS11.5+, again opened the Sample NTSC project, minimized VS11, and opened Thunderbird. VS11 closed. Since I have more versions installed I proceeded to VS12 (Pro), repeating the same procedure as with the others. VS 12 did not close down. So I have it narrowed down to VS10 & 11...

Next I opened VS8, opened a VS 8 project I have, minimized, opened Thunderbird and checked emails. VS8 did not close. So I repeated it with VS9. VS9 did close down.

Finally I repeated with all versions, however this time none closed. Conclusion: Strange behavior that 2-different email clients (Outlook & Thunderbird) not related to NLEs would cause the same problems. However so far on my PC, it happened 1x only, and has not repeated itself. Also I'll note that with any and all versions I've had an occasional closing down, nothing that continued where I could not continue working after relaunching the program. When working on projects, I don't have my internet connected, check emails, or work on much of anything else except the video.

FWIW, I have never had this problem with any version of VS, any operating system and any email client. I have just test the three versions of VS I have on this computer (VS 12, 11.5+ and 10+), first opening them, then opening MS Outlook 2007, and separate, Windows Mail (the only other email client I have on this computer). In all cases, VS remained open and totally usable.

In the past, on other computers using XP (and for that matter ME), and a variety of email clients including Outlook, Outlook Express and Thunderbird, and VS from 7 up, none of them has ever behaved in the manner described. So I too am stumped...

I don't think that you can load a project which was created with v10 using version 9 (projects are NOT backwards compatible and so when saving in v10 you must select 'save as v9'). You say the problem occurs with every project you have. With the above in mind do you have any projects created with v9 which won't load using v9?

Anyway it would seem that there must be a conflict with your 'system' (installed software) either caused by something which was installed after your last working project or perhaps something has become corrupt without causing other programs to crash. Or have you installed a new piece of HARDWARE recently including adding more memory or changing the memory.

Now the next suggestions are pure speculative and may have already been suggested.

Have you tried taking some memory OUT (removing one of the dimms - I am assuming that you have more than one 'stick' of memory installed if you only have one then if you can replace that memory stick with another)? If you have multiple sticks of memory and removing one has no affect then swap the remaining stick with the one you previously removed. Remember when removing memory then remove the one FURTHEST from the CPU - refer to your motherboard manual.
It could be that VS is using some part (address) of memory which isn't normally used and which is faulty. If removing one stick of memory
How much memory do you have and how many dimms are installed?
I am almost sure that VS 10 isn't real good at managing the use of memory!

The other suggestions I think have already been mentioned viz.
RESTORE your PC to a point (date) BEFORE the problems started.

A FRESH installation of EVERYTHING including Windows (I have resorted to this in the past when I was having trouble with v10 which (by the way) didn't fix the problem as the problem was occurring from the time I installed v10 but that's another problem resolved (now) by not using v10). I realise that this is a daunting task and takes a long time (make sure you write down the names of everything installed before you start so you remember to reinstall everything). If you do this I suggest that you install VS FIRST (after Windows) and check that it works ok and then installing everything else one by one checking the operation of VS after each application is installed (if VS all of a sudden starts to misbehave then you will know which application is causing problems).
Let me know how you go.

Thanks John for the various suggestions - At this stage I am not inclined to reinstall XP. Bit daunting as you say & the workaround I mentioned earlier in the thread does keep things going OK.
Next time I open my PC I will check on the memory....
Had hoped the DirectX latest update might help, but no, except strangely for a half hour window when everything was OK. (that is at first it made no difference, then a couple of days later came the small window, then back to original problem)

Anyway I will keep looking & thinking!

Hi everybody
Sorry I have taken so long to continue with this topic....
After recently having numerous problems unrelated to VS (unresponding programs, sound cutting out etc) I finally bit the bullet and did a clean reinstall of Win XP....formatting hard drive etc.
I have then done a controlled reinstall of the programs I use starting with VS 10+.(even before doing all the windows updates including SP3)
On first install VS worked pefectly and subsequently after installing updates and other programs one at a time until.... I downloaded the latest version of Adobe acrobat reader (9.**)
VS promtly started closing again.
uninstalled Reader and VS OK again.
Did this a couple of times with same result.

Then tried Reader 8.1 --Same result.

Now found Version 7 of Reader on an old programe disc (Photoshop elements 5) and tried that.

This time VS worked properly.

So for me it looks like the culprit(s) are the newer versions of Adobe Reader!

Hope that helps.

Hi Chris

First its strange that I did not get notification of this post, so thanks for the e-mail. I would have totally missed this one.

Adobe Acrobat Reader, who would have thought that.

I have two PC at the moment both with the problem, ironically starting whilst answering your posts.
Both pc running Acrobat V9

The old pc---I have reinstalled acrobat V7¡Xbingo

My new pc I have uninstalled acrobat reader, no new install, again its performing ok.
I will install Acrobat reader later????????

Its early days but I could crash video studio practically at will. Now it just keeps going.

Do you think its worth sending Adobe and Corel a report of this problem?

Regards and many thanks

Surprising that more people did not encounter the problem - I would have thought that Adobe Acrobat Reader was used by many people.....
