VS10+ closing down after loading project

Post by chrishargrave »

Hi everybody
Glad to see the forum seems to be working again.....

The problem I have is an old one which I know has been aired before, but I cannot find any answers!

When I load a project for further editing VS just shuts down after about 20 -30 seconds. I don't even have to do anything to the project - just load it then wait and it shuts down -no messages at all. same thing if I start editing.

I have done a full reinstal of VS and then in desperation an 'over the top' reinstal of XP . All to no avail.

The problem started intermitently about 6 months ago but is now worse - almost every time I start a project.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated

Thanks

Hi Chris,

is there anything in the Windows Event Viewer logs?

Start > right-click on My Computer > Manage will open the Computer Management window.

In the left pane, click on the "+" to the left of Event Viewer and then look in the Application log for red circles with white diagonal crosses in them signifying program errors.

You might find something referring to VS which could give you a clue. Not much, but it could give you a start.

Hi Chris

My first thoughts would have been a corrupt clip/file in the project, but if it happens with new projects then that rules that out. Unless your using the same files of course.

When you say you have done a full re-install do you mean you have performed a ¡¥Clean¡¦ install?
That is , you uninstall and then delete all remaining VS files.

Thanks 2dogs & trevor for your replies

The error logs come up with two (recently) for VS -

error application vstudio.exe version 10.0.0.0 faulting module ulppmgr.dll
version 8.0.0.0 fault address 0*00002fbf
and
hanging application vstudio.exe version 10.0.0.0 hang module hungapp version 0.0.0.0 hang address 0*00000000

All of which i'm afraid is meaningless to me...

I did do a 'clean' re-install -twice! once before re-intalling windows XP and again after.

I have just created a short new project with two or three clips and transitions without any problem....then saved the project and closed VS.
Then open VS again & open the new project ...hangs after a few seconds.
I can open any .vsp in the timeline using 'insert video' without any problem, but then of course it is not possible to amend any of the original edits.

ulppmgr.dll has cropped up before in posts about sudden crashes of VS10 - though i never experienced any on my pc. there was no resolution to the problem on the forum, but it was thought to be possibly caused by a memory leak.

I would make sure to load the latest directX update, it might help, and it certainly wouldn't do any harm.

You might also try setting up a dedicated video editing hardware profile, minimising other program usage and thereby reducing the possibility of conflicts with other software.

When you say you have made a re-install of XP
There are 3 scenarios.

1. Clean install.
Format the hard drive thus getting rid of EVERYTHING on the computer and starting from scratch.
2. Clean Install.
Wiping out the Old XP Operating system but preserving all other files on the hard drive such as your spreadsheets, documents, photographs, music etc.
3. Upgrade Install.
Simply installing XP on top of itself thus preserving all of your programs and settings.

Which method did you use?
You might also try the suggestions in our troubelshooting guide

Hi

What version of VS 10 are you using? there is a SE version that comes packed when you buy hardware, and a full version bought from Ulead/Corel??????????

You can also get updates for VS 10. follow this link

VS10+ closing down after loading project

Post by chrishargrave »

Hi again
The XP re-install was using the repair option which comes after accepting the licence during setup - so no format.

the version of VS is an upgrade bought fom ulead - CD, not a download

I have updated direct X and tried removing quicktime & real player (troubleshooting link)

No change.

When I have a little more time I will have a go at some of the other suggestions.

For now
thanks again

VS10+ closing down after loading project

Post by chrishargrave »

Hi all
Having looked at a different post I followed a link to the latest Directx update and downloaded & ran it again.
This seemed to work - for an hour! - then it all went wrong again.

However I do seem to have found a solution which works for me (at the moment)

So order of events is...
1 open VS, then file/open project/ xyz.vsp
2 exit VS before it has chance to shut down
3 open VS again - project now appears in list of recently opened projects at bottom of file menu -double click on this to open project
4 Now able to edit as normal with no problem...!

Also able to open and edit any other project from file/open project provided I don't close VS.

Seem to have to do this each time I open VS - but so far it is a workaround

You say this started happening about 6 months ago...would that have also coincided with any software you may have installed?...even is it's something like Codec packs?

Could also be something you deleted 6 months ago...

As another thought...try turning your auto save off in VS (just remember to save often)

VS10+ closing down after loading project

Thanks Clevo
Afraid I can't remember what programs have been added - certainly some have so that may be the problem.

I have turned auto save off - no joy

I am now going to work through setting up a video profile...!

Hi Chris

Now your not on your own............
You said in your first post
When I load a project for further editing VS just shuts down after about 20 -30 seconds. I don't even have to do anything to the project - just load it then wait and it shuts down - no messages at all. same thing if I start editing.

Well this started happened to me the other day, in fact yesterday.

I have just finished using the trial version of Video Studio X2 and needed to save some of the projects as VS 10 compatible.
It was after opening these VSP¡¦s that the problem started.
I don¡¦t think this should affect VS 10, but I cannot think of anything else I have done.

Anyhow after a Clean Install I was hoping for some success, alas no.

I have never had this problem before, in fact for me Video Studio has been pretty stable.

I don¡¦t need to say that when I find the culprit you will be first to know.

Oh dear! Sorry if it's catching Trevor!

Does my workaround (above) work for you?

Look forward to a permanant solution!

I have to report exactly the same problem as Trevor. With both VS10+ and VS X2 Pro installed, I tried to save a project as a VS10 file - no way. VS 10 tries to load and crashes. Just a second after the file has finished loading, before I can do anything. It looks like VS 10 nad VS X2 Pro do not like each other.

I don't have VS 12 - or any other version - installed, so that can't be the root of my problem....
