I am getting the "Cannot start the capture graph" error message when I try to capture from my JVC GR-D850U camera. I am using VisualStudio X2 and a firewire card in my laptop.

I had been using various versions of VS for the past few years with my Canon camera and it all worked just fine. I was able to capture on the same laptop with the same VS version X2. However, my camera broke down and I had to get a new one. Now, I am try to capture the DV tapes that I made on my Canon - they do not work. I tried recording new tapes on JVC - they do not work either.

Any help would be MOST appreciated!

Do you have any other devices that also use firewire, such as an external hard drive? If so it may be preventing VS from getting access to the drivers needed to capture.

Does windows recognize your camcorder being connected? You should see in the My Computer, your camcorder listed as an external device. Try using the free capture utility called WinDV. It works with Firewire only, and captures DV. Several of us use it over VS or MSP capture. If you can not capture using WinDV, it then points to a system problem, if you can then we must look at something wrong with VS. You can also try capturing using the built in Windows Movie Maker. Just an end note, if you can not get VS to capture from your camcorder, but can with WinDV or WMM, there's nothing wrong with using a third party program to get the video onto your PC. Once it's on your PC, you can then insert it into VS for editing. Several of us prefer to use other programs for capturing, even though we can capture with VS...

There are several posts concerning this problem. To access them, do a forum search using the keywords typed in just like this can AND not AND start AND capture AND graph. The usage of the word AND between your keywords, will produce posts that have all those, or the exact phrase. Also limit your search to the VideoStudio forum, and Popular Products.

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried capturing using the Windows Movie Maker and it seemed to work - I still need to test capturing an entire tape.

I do have a question though. Windows Movie Maker gives me a couple of options re the file formats. One of them is AVI - is that the same as the DV format I always used with VS?

Uncompressed AVI is about 65 GB per hour. DV-AVI is about 13 GB per hour. You can figure what MM is capturing by calculating its size/hour.
