After a series of Windows Vista automatic updates approximately eight months ago, I suddenly started having issues with the Multi-Trim Video function in VS11+ where playback was fine until the quick search interval fast-forward button was clicked on to scroll through the footage. On clicking on the playback button in Multi-Trim video after doing that, the picture is then jerky as if every other frame is missing.
There are no problems whatsoever with playback in any other part of VS11+.
Although it is very irritating, I have put up with it until now, but having just upgraded to VS Pro X2, I am now finding it is doing exactly the same in that version as well !
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium on an HP Pavilion dv9500 Notebook with DirectX 10.
From doing various searches on the internet it appears that it could be a problem resulting from Windows Vista Service Pack 1, which was installed as an automatic update on 21/7/08, but how can I be sure ?
I really don't want to have to go back that far with a System Restore as presumably that would mean having to re-install numerous programs I have installed since then ?
Has anybody else had this problem with the Multi-Trim Video and how has it been resolved ?

Does it play smoothly in Project mode?On clicking on the playback button in Multi-Trim video after doing that, the picture is then jerky as if every other frame is missing.
Have you updated your DirectX lately? DirectX updates are not included in automatic updates, and must be done manually on a periodic basis. Also note that a DirectX update may not necessarily change the version number.I am using Windows Vista Home Premium on an HP Pavilion dv9500 Notebook with DirectX 10.
What about removing the update? If that doesn't fix the problem you can always re-install it.From doing various searches on the internet it appears that it could be a problem resulting from Windows Vista Service Pack 1, which was installed as an automatic update on 21/7/08, but how can I be sure ?

Not compared to Clip mode it doesn't, but then it is nowhere near as jerky as it is in the Multi-Trim playback.Black Lab wrote:Does it play smoothly in Project mode?On clicking on the playback button in Multi-Trim video after doing that, the picture is then jerky as if every other frame is missing.
I never view the footage in Project mode, only in Clip mode.
Project mode has always played back on the timeline a bit flickery and with less quality than in Clip mode ever since I started using Video Studio about 8 years ago. I presume it's supposed to be like that ?
According to this, I definitely have the most up-to-date version installed.Black Lab wrote:Have you updated your DirectX lately? Don't know if I am looking in the right place or not though !?
I have now removed that update but it has made no difference.Black Lab wrote:What about removing the update? Ok, so what kind of clips are we talking about? From the library or timeline right click on one and post the properties here.
Where did the clips come from? Camcorder, still camera, Internet? If a cam, what kind?
What are your project properties?

I use a Canon XHA1 camcorder, but in Standard definition to film football matches, not HDV.Black Lab wrote:Ok, so what kind of clips are we talking about? From the library or timeline right click on one and post the properties here.

I capture to a Firestore portable hard drive as DV Type 1, then transfer the footage from there to my laptop for editing from the laptop's built-in hard-drive.
Project (and clip) properties are:
PAL (25fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9, 25fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder - type 1
DV Audio - PAL, 48,000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
I have been using the same equipment and editing in VS11+ (and now VS Pro X2) in exactly the same way for the past two years and it always used to work perfectly in Multi-Trim Video up until about 8 months ago.
I have always installed any VS patches as soon as they become available...my Pro X2 is currently showing as 12.0.98.1, so it definitely looks like a Windows Vista problem to me.
Maybe a missing or corrupt driver somewhere after an automatic update ?...but how do I find that ?
What I can't understand is why all clips play back perfectly from the timeline or the library, but not in Multi-Trim ?

I have to admit that it sounds like you are doing everything as it should be done. I will also admit that I have never used Multi-Trim, so I'm afraid I am out of ideas.
Somebody that runs Vista (I use XP) and uses Multi-Trim will have to confirm or deny your theory.

I have found out what caused the problem...a faulty connection in the lid of my laptop !
The display has now 'gone' completely and I am having to use an external monitor from the VGA output.
The Multi-Trim video playback works perfectly when viewed through that.
Maybe I should have tried that in the first place ?
...and there was me thinking there was something wrong with Video Studio !

The fact that it played fine except in Multi-Trim mode certainly would not have lead me to think it was the laptop lid. Glad you solved it.Maybe I should have tried that in the first place ?
