Help with audio filters

Greetings all:
I had a question about the audio filters in VS X2. When I have a clip that I want to apply an audio filter that will remove hiss, for example and that his begins immediately when the clip starts I apply an audio filter to the clip and it appears that the first few frames still allow the loud his (used in my example) to remain unfiltered, then after say 5-10 frames the audio filter kicks in and removes the hiss. Now, this is quite annoying because when that hiss is suddenly removed and the audio filter applies it is VERY noticeable and distracting. Keep in mind that this audio filter is applied to the entire audio clip I am editing...in most cases I have several different audio clips, each may have a separate or numerous audio filters applied differently.
This happens even after rendering the file and outputting it. I am at odds here because in some cases I could just go into the audio time line and rubber band the sound down until the filter kicks in, but in other cases those 5-10 frames at the beginning may be very important and the sound needs to be regulated with the appropriate audio filter.
Do any of you have any suggestions as to how to make this audio filter kick in when it should when the clip starts?

Thank you for your help.

I for one (and I suspect quite a few others) don't use the inbuilt audio filters in VS. I split the audio, then put the audio file through an external audio editing program (I use Nero's WaveEditor -- though there is also the free and excellent Audacity), then reinsert the cleaned file.

I too split the audio file, but you say that you put it through to clean then reinsert it...how do you externally cleanjust the audio portion? I know there are many programs that will do this for you but you need to have an external audio file, how do you save just the audio file and save just the audio file outside of VS for cleaning?

Choosing Share>Create Sound File will make a single wav file of all the audio on the timeline. If you want to tweak the entire project you can simply do this with the project in the timeline. If you only want to adjust one song, create a new project and put the song on the timeline then choose Create Sound File.

You then open your audio editor and make the adjustments, save it, then re-import it into VS.

OK, thank you...does seem like quite a long process to clean audio...I guess it could be a bit of a pain if you have a video with quite a lot of different external sound and have to do many clips. No worries, thank you for providing this form me.

As I have said many times, VS is a good video editor but not so much when it comes to audio.

Show me a NLE that does EVERYTHING THE WAY I WANT IT and I will buy it...providing it doesn't cost too much.

Don't get me wrong, I know it can and usually is a tedious process. But I guess my reply was based on the various video editing programs that make audio filters easier. I also understand that every program has it's pro's and con's...I just have a very soft spot for VS...always have, but I guess I was just wishing it could be easier to use the audio options in VS.

Better audio controls have been posted on the Wish List in the past, but it wouldn't hurt adding another voice there.
