This is really just a general question. When I use filters or transitions, there's always a major lag and I can barely see the result of what I have done. Obviously I can't change my computers specs right off the bat so there's no point in posting them, but is there a way to maximize VS's performance somehow through like settings or something I can do that might help with the lag? I use VS 11 and have a vista if that helps any. I pretty much just want to use VS as best I can with my current hardware and want to know if there are any handy tips or settings that would help. Thanks in advance.

Are you using the proxy editting feature? If not, try turning that on and see how you go... but be aware that it can take a moment or twenty for VS to create the proxy file - especially for larger HD files.

Well if you're using an XP machine, then you might be interested in the following: Steve's tutorial on Creating a Video Editing Profile. With Vista, it is basically impossible to tweak the same as XP. It simply does not allow you the same control.

Applying video filters, color corrections and the like will slow down the process, because those must be applied to each and every frame. Transitions however are only applied to a few frames, so there's really not much recoding taking place, especially when you have Smart Render enabled.

And while you may not be able to tweak your current computer, it is always useful to know what your set-up is. So though you did not post the details this time, you might want to consider filling our your profile with those system details. And that way, in future, you will never have to worry about posting them again -- you will simply have to ask people to click your System button below!

I agree with Ken (as well as the other responses). But if your system specs are fine (which we obviously don't know) that could point to other problems unrelated to system performance.

Ah, makes sense. How do you enable smart render? Sorry even though I've been using VS for a while I'm still pretty illiterate with it heh.
