I have recently purchased a new helmet camera. The output is a 740x480 avi. The recorder uses the divix codec.
When I drop the video clips into the time line it slows the performance of VS. The system is also putting an attribute icon in the clips. I am not sure what it is and I figure that if I know what that is then I can work out what the problem is.
I have circled the attribute in this image

Editing DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4 file types are very demanding on computers since they are very highly compressed. Yes it will slow things down, and unless you have a super-PC, will take forever to render your final product.
That icon appears to be the one for Proxy file. When you are using the Proxy Files feature, VS places an icon on the clip, indicating that a proxy file was created, and being used. Go to Preferences (press F6 on your keyboard, or File menu>Preferences), then to the Proxy tab, to disable it if you don't want to use Proxy files for editing..

Hi Keith
Increasing your ram may help improve VS reaction/editing times, inserting clips to timeline and library etc, but it will not improve render/convert times.
The speed of your CPU is guilty hear, that¡¦s assuming your pc is working efficiently.
Can you fill in your profile to include your pc spec¡¦.
And will be available under the System button below.

Thanks Trevor,
I have update my profile.
The biggest issue i have is trying to edit these files. I am able to trim the fil;es using the multi trim function.
When I try to add effects, music or trim the clips further in the timeline my system more or less grinds almost to a halt.
I can get around this by converting the files to whatever my output is going to be -just another step in the process
cheers

Umm, where?I have update my profile.
Another thing you don't tell us is which version of VS you are using. It has been my experience that vX2 does not handle multiple timelines nearly as smoothly as v10+ did.
