I have been using HDVSplit quite successfully to capture HDV from my Sony HC1 HDV camera. The time splitting works quite well for these files and then I simply move the files into VSPro to edit, etc.

I was wondering why I cannot use VSPro to capture the HDV from the Sony video camera. Is this just a quirk or am I not doing something properly?

What version of Video Studion are you using?
I've used VS10 to capture HDV from my HDR-HC1 without any problems.
Video Studio won't split your video by scene like HDVsplit will. Even the latest version of VS12 won't split by scene.
If your HDR-HC1 is setup properly to output HDV VS 10 and above should be able to capture HDV.

I am using Corel VideoStudio 12 X2 recently downloaded from the web site. Video camera is set up to HDV output with an ilink connection.

I am wondering if there is a special setting in VS?

You are the second person in as many days complaining of the same problem. The other person has a Canon HV30 HDV camera, and otherwise is the same -- VS X2 Pro using Firewire/iLink and the camera set to output HDV. The problem is that there are quite a few other users (including me) with HDV cameras and X2, who don't have any problem capturing with X2 (or VS11+/11.5+ or 10+).

The only thing I can think of for the moment is to suggest you first go to the Microsoft DirectX website and download the latest update patch. The current one is dated November 2008 and can be found at http://tinyurl.com/6jj2lw

Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular -- and now also in X2 -- which appear linked to Windows updates. The menu preview , 'building preview graph' and other problems in the burning module seem to be amongst them. Who knows but it could also correct capture problems...

Note that DirectX is not included in the usual pattern of Windows automatic updates. It has to be done every so often by the user manually. So unless you have recently done this, you are probably still using the original, non-updated version of DirectX which came with your computer.

To get the HDR-HC1 camera to output HDV properly it must be set to HDV or Auto with the iLink connection off.
If you camera is set properly it will appear in the Device Manager>Sound, video and game controllers> AV/C device.
If it appears as a Sony DV camera directly under the Device Manager it is set up to out put SD video.
