Had a startle the other day when the forum was OFF!! One of the most valuable things COREL has (or is allowing) to support us'ns.

I had a problem with NO SOUND with VS12 disks.and this is my experience; a little lengthy but should be of help to others…..

Was running VS11 for quite some time with absolutely no problems other than hangups every once in a while. Upgraded to VS12. Downloaded it and installed with no problems. Through this forum discovered and installed the FIX.

Started and completed the ‘creative’ portion of new two part project
Did a SAVE VIDEO on both parts. Result was OK
Initiated CREATE DISK using these saved videos.
Created TITLE page with background music/picture.
Ran PREVIEW function of the CREATE DISK operation; everything worked fine
Rendered the disk successfully (according to the window that says so).
I like to double check things before going public so brought up Windows Media Player and ran the newly created disk. NO SOUND!!!
Brought up REALPLAYER with same result.

Conclusion: VS12 was creating a bad disk.

Created small test project to shorten the time needs while changing and testing various parameters.: Project Setting, Preferences/disk parameters/4_3/16_9 etc to no avail. A friend of mine in town has VS12 so we ran the test project on his system and it worked fine. Convinced that my VS12 was the problem.

VS11 and 9 still installed; tried them with VS12 disk, same result NO SOUND!!. Thought it had to be a ULEAD shared file problem of some sort.

Deinstalled and reinstalled the three versions in various combinations with same result.

WMD and REAL worked fine for everything else. I have POWERDVD (Cyberlink) installed as part of the packaged DELL system; decided to give a VS12 disk a try…it worked! The disk out of VS12 was fine.

Uninstalled 9/11/12 and did a SYSTEM RESTORE to November 2008.
Installed 9, tested it and everything was fine.
Installed 11, tested it and everything was fine.
Installed 12 and the sound problem came back.
Reinstalled WMD and REAL to latest version with no change
Found the fix in this forum that described that 12 changes the sound driver/speakers…it did it on my system so I changed back to my system configuration..no change

WMD and REAL work fine everywhere except with the disks created on VS 12 I now use POWERDVD to do all my proofing…. Decided to ‘live with it’ rather than waste more time. Must be a fix but didn't figure it out

System specs; Windows XP Home Edition 5.1/version 2002/Service Pack 3

VS 9 version 9.0
VS 11 version 11.0.0.0000
VS 12 version 12.0.0.0000

Power DVD from Cyberlink (came packaged with system) version ???

REALPLAYER version 11.0.7
WMD ????

It sounds like you made yourself jump thru a lot of hoops in trying to find the cause of the problem.

Since you have System Restore enabled, you might consider making a fresh restore point prior to installing any new programs.

If you had made a new point prior to the X2 install, it would have made it easy to revert to your previous working setup.

That being said, I am certainly not a big fan of either Real Player or Windows Media Player. Both of them try to report back to base all the time, unless you go thru a lot of settings in their preferences to prevent it.

I personally prefer to use the minimalistic Media Player Classic, freeware, part of the "Real Alternative" suite. With MPC and the freeware ffdshow and Haali media splitter installed, I have yet to find a media file type I can't play - though for playing DVD's, I'd use WinDVD that comes bundled with X2. I'm not a big fan of the fast forward controls in PowerDVD.

Thanks for the reply 2dogs. The whole arena of codecs is one big mystery for me so I took your references and downloaded all three.

Have Media Player Classic and the two codecs you referenced installed now and had one problem bringing it all 'on line' I had to select all the SOURCE and TRANSFORM filters; have no idea why. Now I can play/view VIDEO SAVE FILES from VS12 and/or dvd's created in VS12 as well as all commercial media.

I don't send a lot of e-mails to this forum but I do reference it a lot. A plethora of info...without it I'd probably have given up on VS a long time ago.....

My friend also sends his thanks; we both have a new media player now...

Keep it up!!!

PS How do you guys acquire and absorb all of this info??

Glad you found it useful - and passed it on too!

Codecs are a bit of a mystery, a bit like installed fonts. Sometimes the worst thing you can do is install a mega codec pack - that can really screw things!

When you configure ffdshow, you can set it to play different sorts of file. I find it useful on lower powered pc's, since enabling ffdshow to play a given media file can often result in lower cpu usage.

When you play a media file with Media Player Classic, with ffdshow installed, you may notice some icons appear in the system tray. If you mouse over them you'll see one may be the ffdshow video decoder, or the ffdshow audio decoder. When you play a file in an mp4 or .mkv "container" you will also see an icon for the haali media splitter.

As for how we acquire the knowledge - I think it's a bit like fluff building up under furniture!
