Difference between "smart edge" and "edge see

Post by pdxrjt »

Sorry for such a basic question, but what exactly is the difference between the Edge seeker and Smart edge selection tools? I went to help and got: Edge Seeker finds the edges between two areas with color differences when you click on the edges of irregularly shaped areas and then Smart Edge automatically finds the edges of irregularly shaped areas when you click along the edges.

Well a) that doesn't tell me a whole lot except one is supposed to be color based and one edge based (although it seems to me you couldn't find an edge if it wasn't a different hue/saturation etc.) b) I tried them both with different pics....one selecting between a dark blue vs light blue edge and another picking a bright orange moon from a dark sky. Both produced similar results (as far as I could tell.)

An answer is appreciated....and I sure don't mind looking in the help file if you know what I should look up.

TIA

Well...of my three books on Paint Shop Pro, the only one that seems to have a good description of it is Paint Shop Pro X the Official Guide. Though others mentioned that it works on contrast rather than just color this is the paragraph on the topic.
These selection types are similar to the Freehand tool except they have the ability to automatically detect the edge (in most cases) as you move either of them along the edge of the subject you ant to isolate, which can save you a lot of work. Both of these tools work by examining the pixels surrounding the areas being selected and attempting to detect an edge based on the difference between the color or brightness of adjacent pixels. What makes the two tools different is how they operate.
The Edge Seeker performs its edge detection beginning where you start the selection with your first click, and then you click around the edge of the area you want to select. In this manner it works similarly to Point to Point selection except Paint Shop Pro automatically detects the edge along a line between the points.
The Smart Edge detects the edge of a subject by creating a long rectangle as you drag the cursor over a portion of the edge you want to select. When you release the mouse button, the edge inside the rectangle is evaluated and the edge detected. With both types, you continue to do this until you get back to the starting point.
Soooo...yeah. Difference is how the slectable search area is defined then.
