Install & run VS and MSP on the same PC

Post by oldfan »

Just tried to open a new Topic in the General Discussion Section http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewforum.php?f=48

but was met with
Information

Sorry, but only moderators can post topics in this forum.
I hope this is the right section to ask but my question is cross-section, re VS and MSP.

I've been using Ulead VS v9.0 for years on a desktop PC still running XP SP1 (Pentium 4, 2.4GHz and 1Gb RAM) and just love it.

Recently build a new desktop PC, see my profile, on which I installed VS v12 - and completed a big project, I can only say, wow, it is amazing.

But for that project I also needed what I discovered here on the board is called ¡§moving paths¡¨ and I learned MSP offers it but not VS.

I also carry all around a Lenovo X60s with a Core Duo 1.83Ghz and 2Gb RAM, running XP SP2, no video editing tools installed, mainly used for office/net and and PC troubleshooting.

I prefer to stick with XP, and I love the ease of use VS offers.

Does MSP offers the same?
Should I remove VS from my new main home machine and replace it with MSP?
Or I can install both and run them one by one in accordance with the needs of the project?
Has anybody done the same?
MSP¡¦ footprint looks 3 times bigger than VS, how does that translates in system resources use?
Is it possible to transfer project files between VS and MSP?

You can run MSP and VS12 on the same machine. Install them in different directories, of course. I'd recommend installing MSP8 first and then VS12, so that the common functions are all the latest.

MSP does require more resources, but you won't have any problem with your rig.

As a rule, project files are not inter-transferable, but you can, of course, transfer rendered video files.

Thank you for replying.
Could you please elaborate more about what you mean by ¡§different directories¡¨?

Setup created a directory and installed VS in C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Video Studio 12,
MSP install will/should look like
C:\Program Files\Corel\MSP
or
C:\Program Files\MSP ?

Correct me if I am wrong by understanding the part about ¡§common functions¡¨ as VS and MSP have some same functionalities and by first installing MSP as you suggested I will avoid duplicate registry files, for example.

You simply install them normally - they go into different directories by default. You also need to update XP to Service Pack 2.
Try and avoid service pack 3 because the jury is still out on service pack 3 and its effect upon some of the "Ulead" Programs.

Anyone got a problem with XP SP3 and MSP8 ?

Thank you, sjj1805,

my newly build PC, the one described in my profile, has an initial install and runs XP Pro SP3, just filled in the additional info, sorry for the confusion.

As at the moment it is my most powerful machine I dedicated it to video processing; VS is installed and runs smoothly.
I encountered some difficulties - type [cannot load library], not related with SP3 I believe, and was able to find a solution after reading the board ¡V main reason that pushed me to join was to say¡¨Thanks¡¨.

If something happens wrong with the combination SP3 & MSP you¡¦ll hear from me for sure.

For the moment I can not decide about the course of action to take: follow devil¡¦s advice and remove once VS, then install MSP, or I can proceed directly with the installation of MSP?

You should not have any problems with proceeding to install MSP. Most of the time conflicts occur between versions of the same program. These are due to the common files shared by them. The main conflict that I've found was the flashplayer version installed by VS.

Currently I have VS8-12 and MSP8 installed on my XP SP3 machine. However I already had MSP8 installed when later versions of VS were released, so the chronological order was followed.

As a safeguard, create a system restore point before installing MSP. If something goes wrong, then all you have to do is restore to before installing MSP, uninstall VS and go from there..

I use Norton Ghost as a backup tool and in the meantime I run it already, first as Spybot asked for a major upgrade - have run into problems before so better be able to revert, and second with vidoman's suggestion in mind.
Remains to populate back my daily run Documents on C and Desktop in preparation for Monday.
Guess will proceed with installation of MSP next weekend.

Did it :D

VS kept in place, proceeded with the installation of MSP on my Win XP SP3 machine.
Watched carefully and took notes during Setup for each step.
I already had a folder
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems
containing Ulead Cool3D, setup added a folder Ulead MediaStudio Pro8.
Rem.: VS is in C:\Program Files\Corel
2. Setup created the emplacement D:\MSP8 Preview Files
and a warning message about the possibility to change the location through ¡§Preferences¡¨ was shown.
3. Installation of SmartSoundTracks in C:\Program Files:\SmartSoundSoft
Rem.: same are placed in C:\SmartSoundSoftware on my Win XP SP1 machine
4. Deselected ¡§Country¡¨ and the grayed ¡§Standard¡¨ become selectable, choose ¡§NTSC¡¨
and ready for installation
5. Setup detected a newer version of QuickTime player already installed, warning message 1st to uninstall and then run again the installer, OK to continue (disreagard, keep the newest) with Setup
6. Gave permission into ZoneAlarm to SmartSoundMusic Library to DL tracks, 26 of them, prepared (means downloaded); SmartSoundSowftware installed
7. Flash Player installed
Rem.: after finishing installation I went to Adobe and upgraded Flash player to the latest version , v10.0.12.36
8. Ulead DVDMovie Factory installed
9. Ulead DVD Disk Recorder installed
10. Completed successfully, Finish, OK, new icon on Desktop, hello dear
11. Cleanup, Reboot

Launched MSP.
I saw a ¡§SWITCH¡¨ button with 3 options
1. Audio Editor
2. Corel Video Studio
3. Video Capture

1 and 3 are part of MSP, and clicking on 2. launches VS, but¡K
but whatever I did (new project, open existing one, import video file, etc.) an error message appeared and VS asked to be closed.
Same operations performed with VS launched separately proceeded without any difficulty, VS works same as before.
I can live with that annoyance.

As a test I rendered a 12Mb mpg file in both applications.
No prob.

In short, it MSP can be installed on a machine with VS already in, XP3 does not plays a role, as far as I can see.

It would be nice if someone could suggest a not so time consuming operation to test MSP.

Thanks for all help and encouragements.
