Hi everybody. I am new here. Pls kindly advise me how to resolve my problem:

Prog: Ulead Studio Version 10.
Operating system: Window XP
Problem: Can't convert a 5.4255Mb Ulead VideoStudio10.0 doc into DVD-RW disc.
More infor:
1) I can convert a similar 2.33Mb Ulead VideoStudio10.0 doc into similar DVD-RW disc.
a) This successful video comprises pic, vid and edited movie from my Singapore-Taipei trip.
2) My holiday trip is from Sin-Taipei-Vancouver-Ketchikan-Juneau-Sk agway-IcyPoint-etc.
3) However when I try to convert the Sin-Taipei-Vancoheuver-Ketchikan Ulead VideoStudio10.0 doc into similar DVD-RW disc,
a) 5 sec into the conversion, I got an error code "Unspecific Error".
b) Similar problem occurs when I tries to convert my Sin-Taipei-etc legs.

4) I did a virus scan of my computer, plus tries to repair my Ulead program, still meet similar problem "Unspecific Error".

5) Can someone kindly advise me how to resolve this problem.
Thanks in advance.

And sorry, but are those really MB or do you mean GB? I ask since if they are MB, they are really tiny files in video terms...

Jeff,
Some more infor:

1) Initially when I started this forum, I mentioned that I can burn my
Sin-Taipei.upd leg.[/color]
2) However just now I did this:
a) Remove all Ulead program from my pc.
b) Then re-load / re-set up Ulead program from my original (bought) cd.
c) Then open up my compiled Sin-Taipei-Vancouver-Inside Passage-Ketchikan's Ulead doc.
d) Then from this doc I retain Sin-Taipei's leg, and delete all -Vancouver-Inside Passage-Ketchikan's pic/video / music / overlay.
i.e. retain it as Sin-Taipei 1.upd.
e) Then attempt to burnt this Sin-Taipei 1.upd into DVD.
f) Surrprise...same problem...."unspecified error" and can't burnt. :?
- i.e. I can burnt my previous composed Sin-Taipei.upd.
- But now I can't burn my newly edited Sin-Taipei 1.upd.
- Contents in both upd has not been changed.
- What is changed probably are the wording size etc.
g) Something is not right. Seek your kind guidance to resolve this.

Thks sir.

Hi JL,

I tried posting a reply last night, but it's not showing today - hope it doesn't appear and duplicate this post!

I presume you are using a laptop/notebook.

Laptop drives used to be significantly slower than desktop ones, and also smaller. It may therefore be more important to use windows disk cleanup and defrag and to check the amount of free space on the drive. With the temporary files and folders that VS creates, you should try to have at least twice the amount of free space on your hard drive as the project size.

My first thought was that your error might have been caused by mp3 audio files, with which VS is notoriously picky - but you say that you used .wma files, which should be fine.

Did your previous working project also use .wma audio files?

In order to rule out the DVD burner as a possible cause, you might also try setting VS to output either to DVD folders or an ISO file - or both - rather than trying to output straight to DVD.

If you can successfully create the DVD folders or ISO file, you can try burning them to DVD either with the Ulead burning software or by other third party software - eg Nero, or even the freeware and well-regarded (and tiny!) Imgburn for burning an ISO file to disc.

Good luck!

Hi 2Dogs,
Thks.

1) Yes I am working from a Laptop.
2) Frees space after defrag this morning = 69.6GB.
3) Confirmed music source = .wma (rip from my cd collection onto my pc folder).
4) My previous Sin-Taipei project used .wma audio files too, and I managed to successfully burnt into a DVD-RW disc.
a. I actually continue to built my project by adding Vancouver-Inside Passage-Ketchikan-Juneau-Skagway-Icy Point etc onto the Sin-Taipei¡¦s Ulead 10.0 doc.
i. I.e. it becomes project Sin-Taipei-Vancouver-Inside Passage-Ketchikan-Juneau-Skagway-Icy Point etc Ulead 10.0 doc.
ii. What I am saying is that from this doc, I again remove Vancouver-Inside Passage-Ketchikan-Juneau-Skagway-Icy Point.
iii. So it now becomes Sin-Taipei rev 1 Ulead 10.0 doc.
iv. Now it cannot burnt in DVD!
v. Neither can any other section of this project.
5) I¡¦ve just tried setting VS to output to DVD folders and ISO file.
a. Same fate¡Kunspecified error (just about 5 secs into burning.
6) What other things I can try inorder to burnt directly to a DVD-RW disc format?
a. BTW I¡¦ve already re-installed Ulead VideoStudio 10.0 from my purchased cd, but still can¡¦t burn DVD.

7) Also while waiting for solution, I¡¦ve converted the project in video file.
8) Can you pls kindly advise what software can I use to convert video file into DVD-RW format¡Kso that we can watch it from TV?

Looking to your kind help to get me out of this maze.
Thanks in advance.

Lots of things!

Lack of hard drive space is obviously not the problem then. Is everything on a single large partition, though, or do you perhaps have separate programs + operating system and data partitions?
kimmun wrote:4) My previous Sin-Taipei project used .wma audio files too, and I managed to successfully burnt into a DVD-RW disc.
a.
Then it also sounds like the problem is unrelated to the audio files.
kimmun wrote:I actually continue to built my project by adding Vancouver-Inside Passage-Ketchikan-Juneau-Skagway-Icy Point etc onto the Sin-Taipei¡¦s Ulead 10.0 doc.

I think we need to know your exact workflow. How exactly do you add the North American stuff? Is it in the form of video files or as a separate Video Studio project file?

Although you write "Ulead 10.0 doc" a Video Studio project file has the .vsp file type extension. Are you using "doc" just as a general abbreviation for any computer file or "document"? I don't wish to appear too pedantic, but it can help to be really specific when troubleshooting a problem!
kimmun wrote:ii. What I am saying is that from this doc, I again remove Vancouver-Inside Passage-Ketchikan-Juneau-Skagway-Icy Point.
iii. So it now becomes Sin-Taipei rev 1 Ulead 10.0 doc.
So are you removing the North American video and audio files from your timeline - or removing a North American .vsp file from the burning module?
kimmun wrote:iv. Now it cannot burnt in DVD!
So whatever it is that you have done, something has changed. Perhaps you've managed to upset the Gods...
kimmun wrote:5) I¡¦ve just tried setting VS to output to DVD folders and ISO file.
a. Same fate¡Kunspecified error (just about 5 secs into burning.
OK, it's good that you tried that, and it seems to indicate that the burning module is not responsible - or at least any attempt to send data to the DVD burner is not responsible.
kimmun wrote:6) What other things I can try in order to burnt directly to a DVD-RW disc format?
Well, when all else fails, I resort to the "make sure you have installed the latest DirectX update" suggestion. You'll find a link to the update in a sticky at the top of the forum, and it will be worth trying.

Also, go to the Corel site and look for any updates to VS10 - I believe there might have been one or two, perhaps addressing unrelated issues but certainly worth installing if you haven't done so already.
kimmun wrote:a. BTW I¡¦ve already re-installed Ulead VideoStudio 10.0 from my purchased cd, but still can¡¦t burn DVD.
If you bought Video Studio in a boxed version that comes with an install CD, you can always do a "repair install" rather than removing the program and starting from scratch.
kimmun wrote:7) Also while waiting for solution, I¡¦ve converted the project in video file.
That's interesting, since it proves that VS10 can create a video file from your project. It's possible there is something in the DVD menu that is causing a problem. The DirectX update is known to be able to resolve preview problems in the burning module.

Also, Windows updates can upset your system, necessitating the DirectX update. It's possible that you created your original Sin-Taipei project prior to one of those problematic Windows updates, and that's why it worked.
kimmun wrote:8) Can you pls kindly advise what software can I use to convert video file into DVD-RW format¡Kso that we can watch it from TV?
Unfortunately the obvious program is called Video Studio! There might be other ways of dealing with it. Some video cards have an analogue output which you can hook up to an analogue TV. Newer ones will have an HDMI connector to hook up to a digital TV. You might have a suitable desktop pc in your household that you could connect to the TV, if your laptop doesn't have an analogue out function, and just play the video file you created from the project. You might have a PS3 in the household which could play a file from a hard drive formatted with the FAT32 file system.

You might be able to write the video file back to a blank tape in your camcorder. If you were starting out with footage from a miniDV camcorder, you could render your project to DV avi straight back to the camcorder, if the camcorder has that ability. In PAL zones, sometimes the capability is disabled due to the higher duty charged on camcorders with that feature!
kimmun wrote:Looking to your kind help to get me out of this maze.
Thanks in advance.
I hope you stay with it! I am anxious to know the cause of your troubles!

Also, look in the Windows Event Viewer "Application" log, and look for red circles containing a diagonal white cross. If you find any, right-click on them and select "properties" to see if there is anything mentioning specific Video Studio Modules.

Good luck!

Got to retype reply as I tried sending this while my pc was logout.
Hope it's not a repost.

Is everything on a single large partition, though, or do you perhaps have separate programs + operating system and data partitions?

Apology: After defrag my C Drive:
Total capacity = 69.6GB
Used space = 23.6 GB
Free space = 46 GB.

How exactly do you add the North American stuff? Is it in the form of video files or as a separate Video Studio project file?

I add the North American stuff by adding video files, music files, wordings, overlays (pic + edited video) onto timeframes of Sin-Taipei's.
i.e. continue to extend the timeframe.

Although you write "Ulead 10.0 doc" a Video Studio project file has the .vsp file type extension. Are you using "doc" just as a general abbreviation for any computer file or "document"? I don't wish to appear too pedantic, but it can help to be really specific when troubleshooting a problem!

I meant Ulead VideoStudio 10.0 Document (verbatim from Window explorer's file type).

So are you removing the North American video and audio files from your timeline - or removing a North American .vsp file from the burning module?

Yes- removing video / music files/ overlays/ wordings from the timeline.
kimmun wrote:iv. Now it cannot burnt in DVD!
So whatever it is that you have done, something has changed. Perhaps you've managed to upset the Gods...

I believe so..and I want to appease  but knowledge is bliss (which apparently I don't have).

Well, when all else fails, I resort to the "make sure you have installed the latest DirectX update" suggestion. You'll find a link to the update in a sticky at the top of the forum, and it will be worth trying.

a) I just did download DirectX update.
i) I chose it to park at Program file.
ii) But it did not open a sub-folder in Program file.
iii) It jus park as cabinet files - 113 files and 86.9MB.
iv) It just take few min to download.

b) I then reboot my pc.

c) But to my chagrin, it still did work...same fate while burning DVD..."unspecified error.

d) Here's my thot. Since this is known as an update...can it be inorder for any update to work, the DirectX must exist in my Window in the first place?

i) What if I had previously accidentally / unknowningly remove it?
- will this update still works if that is case?

ii) Where can I locate my original Direct X in my prog folder?

Also, go to the Corel site and look for any updates to VS10 - I believe there might have been one or two, perhaps addressing unrelated issues but certainly worth installing if you haven't done so already.

Did download:
a) V10 SP1 11.7Mb
b) V10 Canon HV10 Support Pack 4Mb
c) V10 HD DVDBurning Pack 4Mb.

If you bought Video Studio in a boxed version that comes with an install CD, you can always do a "repair install" rather than removing the program and starting from scratch.

I did perform repair as well as built from scratch..as I wasn't sure if repair is sufficient.

kimmun wrote:it proves that VS10 can create a video file from your project. It's possible there is something in the DVD menu that is causing a problem. The DirectX update is known to be able to resolve preview problems in the burning module.

But in this case it didn't help me...provided the DirectX is working correctly.

Also, Windows updates can upset your system, necessitating the DirectX update. It's possible that you created your original Sin-Taipei project prior to one of those problematic Windows updates, and that's why it worked.

It could be...but I not sure...as I wouldn't know which / when as the problematic Windows updates.

Woww...you guys are pro....

I hope you stay with it! I am anxious to know the cause of your troubles!

Greatly appreciate, as I have sung praises of Ulead to my colleagues and church mates. I like Ulead's "platform-console based" approach which is idiot-proof for non-IT savvy ppl like me.
I just want to get over this hurdle of DVD direct burning, instead of having to go through another software....timeconsuming !

Also, look in the Windows Event Viewer "Application" log, and look for red circles containing a diagonal white cross. If you find any, right-click on them and select "properties" to see if there is anything mentioning specific Video Studio Modules.

Can kindly direct me to that Window's Event Viewer?

BTW I have another problem ( which I did read up from Ulead's other post): Once I burn a say 39min video file into a 2hr 4.7Gb DVD, I can't add any more video file into this DVD.
I read that they say I must try to tell the DVD not to close.
I don't seem to see this function while burning. Any advise?

Last night I manage to burn using Imgburn (Sin-Ketchikan, and Juneau-Icy Point) into 2 seperate DVDs....quite waste of DVD inview there are still plenty of space left in the DVD.

Looking forward to your kind guidance on this sir.

When you parked the DirectX download files in your Program Files folder you created a mess for yourself. As you noticed it unpacks numerous cabinet files as well as some others. You should have created a folder in your My Documents or Downloads folder for these.

You need to run the Setup file for DirectX, which is an exe file located in all those files. The Setup file uses those Cabinet files, to install the current and correct files to your system.

I would try to remove all those files from your Program files folders, moving them to their own folder. I generally will create a folder, naming it for example; Nov DirectX Update. Then extract the files into that folder. Once I have run the update (setup file), I delete the folder.

Vidoman,
Ok I will now:

1) Delete all these (113 cabinet files 86.9MB) Direct X files that I had just downloaded.
2) Then create a new folder in my Program Folder - say DirectX
2) And download again from the link and park it in a named folder inside this DirectX folder.
3) Is this correct?

Thks.

Vidoman,
1) I've delected all the earlier bunch of cabinets files that ) downloaded.
2) Downloaded DirectX SDK (DXSDK_Nov 2008)'s dxwebsetup.exe (version 9.251476) - park it inside a folder in My Document.
3) Ran the dxwebsetup.exe.
4) Reboot pc.
5) Tried to burn my project into DVD-RW.
6) Again failed. Same error "unspecified error".
7) I am not giving up  , as I guess there must be something that I miss.
Hopefully someone can guide me to it  . Thks.

kimmun wrote:Can kindly direct me to that Window's Event Viewer
There are several ways to get to it, but I generally click on "Start" then right-click "My Computer" then click on "Manage".

That will open the "Computer Management" window and in the left pane, expand the "Event Viewer" sub folder by clicking on the "+" and then click on the "Application" folder.

I'm sorry to hear that the DirectX update didn't fix things, I was beginning to have high hopes that it would.

The Event Viewer Application log may give us some more clues to work from, though.
