As you say this is a problem that has occurred over a few versions. I, as well as others, simply ignore the message and open my project which, inevitably, is fine.

I read this post and replies with a lot of interest and it brought back memories of a similar post I made 2 years ago (regarding VS v10+ crashing) and the huge 'response' from many users with their thoughts and recommendations - I am still extremely grateful for the input.
There were lots of 'theories' as to whether it was hardware or software (including the o/s) related. I did try Steve's tutorial on creating a video editing 'profile' ([url]http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13950[/url) (which effectively ensures that the minimum of background processes are running at the same time as VS) and I must say that this DID improve things to a degree but did not eliminate the problem. I turned OFF automatic updates and updated the project manually often (every few minutes). This I think could assist as when the update occurs the user is not actually doing anything else so VS is not fighting for resources.
It will be of little comfort to you but my last 'BIG' editing job (8 hours of video down to around 12 projects of around 2 hours) I reverted to using VS v9 and guess what? NOT ONE CRASH! I note another reply also mentions reverting to v9. So for my money v9 is the last stable version. From my use of VS v9 has only marginally less features than v10 which doesn't affect me most of the time.
