VS X2 Pro 'has stopped working'

I frequently get the message "Corel VideoStudio Has Stopped Working." It then forces me to close the program. I am using Vista and have tried running VS as an administrator, but no luck. It seems to happen randomly and very frequently.

VS crashing could be due to a variety of reasons. I've had it crash occasionally, as I think a lot of us have.

Could you provide us with a little more info to work with? What sort of video files are you editing? Right-click on a video clip in the the timeline or Library, select properties, and post them here.

It could be that where you have designated your working folder, does not have enough free space, not enough RAM, conflicting with another program or a background application suddenly jumps to life stealing the resources.

Not that it's directly related to your issue, but keeping DirectX current seems to cure several problems with VS. Go HERE and download the latest MS Direct-X drivers. The most current is dated November 2008

I've had this all the time, to the point I've gone back to using VS9 on my laptop to create DVD's, very annoying after spending 2K on a 64bit desktop and VSx2...

I've found that certain video files crash X2, for example captured some HD footage with Adobe Premier, but when I tried to load them into X2, just going into the directory where the files were would cause X2 to "stop working"

I've had to move all my videos elsewhere and try and move them back one-by-one and identify the ones that cause the problem. I don't know whether this is an X2 or Vista issue, though looking at the files in windows explorer/Premier doesn't result in any problems... Might be worth a try?

I have the same issue. X2 works fine until I try to burn a DVD or create video file, then I get the message VideoStudio must close. I'm thinking it may be related to 64-bit Vista.

I've found that certain video files crash X2,...

Same here. All of my crashes have been caused by "problem" video files. The more-compressed formats and some of the newer HD formats seem to cause the most trouble-prone (for everone). Regular-old DV/AVI still seems to be the most trouble-free format.

I'm thinking it may be related to 64-bit Vista.

Maybe that's a problem too. AFAIK, Video Studio isn't designed for Vista64.

Try turning Auto Save off or at least extending it beyond 20mins...In Vista 64 bit I found turning this off helped eliminate random crashes but I do get the occasional "crash at close".

Also turn off Auto Power saving modes, screen savers, sleep modes settings in Vista 64 bit

This appears related to an .m4a audio file (itunes) in the project. I converted the file to mp3 but when trying to import, VS rejects with invalid file format. Scratching my head.

I'm getting to the point of asking Corel to refund my money and moving on the Premiere Elements. The program is useless if it can't burn a disc or create a file without all the hassles.

This is the Ulead DVD Burn Manager, which is located at: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD folder. The files and folders found under the Common Files, are generally not replaced by doing a simple uninstall/reinstall. The reason, these are shared files for several Corel/Ulead programs, such as VS, DVDMF. If this DLL file is corrupt, you need to delete or rename the folder, then reinstall VS.

This is the MP4 Audio Decoder, and is found under: C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 12. So are any of your video clips MPEG-4, or would be using the MP4 audio decoder? If so you may have to convert the clips to something more manageable before editing or trying to burn a DVD...

Try converting your audio to wav format. VS has troubles with some forms of MP3, although I must say I use those produced by iTunes with no problems. But wav files will work, so if you continue to have problems it's something other than the audio.

Lots of good "tries" here, so here's my tuppence worth!

The "Application xyz" has stopped working message is sadly common when running apps. under Vista. As a software developer myself, I have some symapthy with Corel here - Vista can be a nightmare for this sort of stuff!

What the message usually means, is that Vista is being too impatient to let VS finish what it's busy doing, and thus assumes VS has stopped working, when in fact it is just busy. I get this not just with VS, but with several other applications... and I do NOT get the same issues running the same version of VS under XP Pro.

Running the app. as an administrator may help, but turning off UAC (User account control) is a better diagnostic. (Control Panel --> Security Centre).

Also worth a try, is to disable DEP (Data Execution Prevention) with is a pathetic attempt at stopping malicious /errant applications from doing bad things with memory. Run the command prompt (as an administrator or with UAC off) and type

bcdedit /set nx alwaysoff

To turn DEP back on, it's just the similar, but type

bcdedit /set nx alwayson


(I wouldn't do either unless you've got decent AV/Firewall in place or you're just not connected to the net!)


The other thing VS Pro seems to dislike, is particularly large static images (jpgs etc.)

Turned off the DEP, auto save etc. but still had problem. Began series of emails with Corel support and over several days uninstalled & reinstalled several times. For the last several days was able to burn several disks with no problems.

Early this morning I created and AVI file in VS and encoded it to mpg with CinemaCraft. Inserted the video and adio back into VS to burn the disk. VS started rendering and well into the rendering "Corel VideoStudio has stopped working".

That's where we're at right now. Thought it was resolved.

VS does have problems with some MP3 files. But I have to say, the ones produced by iTunes work fine for me. But try converting the audio to a WAV file. WAV is a rock-solid standard. If that doesn't work the problem is something else.

And speaking of something else, we don't know anything else about your project. What are the properties of the clips? Where did they come from? What are the project properties? What are the output properties?

How do I fix it, it always freezes when I try to render a huffyuv .avi.

Hi all,

I have had this problem since VS10.
The odd crash during editing I have always put down to the fact that I am usually messing with large DV files (20Gb+) so it is not a particular problem. Mainly because VS usually gives the opportunity to rebuild the project on restart.

My main problem since VS11 is that Most times when closing VS, I get Video studio has had to close, Shall we tell Microsoft etc. When I next start VS, It asks if I would like to restore the previous project. This leaves me in a quandry. Did I save it before exiting or do I restore it?
