I have had a problem similar to this where I received the same error message for flash animation.
My problem was solved after installing the patch for VS X2 which can be found here:
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?t=34524
and updating Direct X which can be found here:

I'm experiencing the same problem playing any of the "out of the box" audio files as well as any imported mp3.

The message is "Unable to play the file" along with these numbers - 16804:2:1.

Here's where I'm at - I installed the trial verion of Pro X2 and all the current Direct X via the following URL
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?t=34002.

When I try to install the X2 patch I receive the following message -

Not sure if this will help but here's a pic of my Device Manager.

Any suggestions for the Newbie - Thanks

Patches do not install on trial versions. You have to have a full version installed. If you decide to buy the full version, do NOT simply install the activation key to the trial version you currently have on the computer. Uninstall it first, then download the full version, and activate it. Many people have had a variety of problems when they simply activate the trial version.

Ken - Cheers for that. I thought as much, but had to ask.

Off to check the cushions in the lounge room and pony up on a license.

Very good tip on the uninstall !!

BTW - Is the "Unable to play the file" message related to the trial version?

If it's any kind of Dolby audio, trial versions will not play them because of licensing reasons.

Also, certain types of MP3s can cause problems in VS, although those that are produced by iTunes work fine for me. Try converting your MP3s to WAV files and see if that fixes the problem.
