UMSP 7 capture with Sony HDV camera ?

Post by pyvo »

Anyone found a way of capturing HDV in UMSP7 from a Sony HDV camcorder (HC7 or HC9) ?

I've had over 10 years of endless pleasure with UMSP (starting on version 4 passing through a spell on UVS5 and over the last 3-4 years on UMSP7.0).

All these versions worked fine with my Sony DV cameras (an analogue one then a TRV120e and PC109e) - no problems - great.

When I bought a a new Sony HC7 (HDV) I read that I had to upgrade WinXP to SP2 to benefit from HDV, so I did - still no problems.

And then I plugged in the new Sony HC7 (HDV) and it screwed up the whole capture driver. The UMSP capture application would not recognise either my HC7 nor my 109e at all.

After re-reading the instructions, I downloaded the Sony camcorder capture software and Picture Motion Browser - this is, as expected, not at all on the same par as UMSP. I then managed to get DV from the HC7 (not HDV 'cos I hadn't updated to UMSP7 patch 3 yet) but the 109e would just not get recognised at all.

So I finished the DV edit in UMSP7 and then started to think about printing back to tape. PMB doesn't even 'display' the rendered DV .AVI file even though I 'registered' it and its folder. The only way to get the rendered film back to tape was to uninstall PMB and capture drivers, re-install UMSP7.0 and print the footage back to my Sony 109e (SD DV).

I'd really like to continue using UMSP for HDV work but I seem to be faced with many compatibility problems:
- the Sony HC7 (HDV) camcorder does not speak to my PC without the Sony soft and
- the Sony soft seems to make UMSP 7 unoperable and
- UMSP7.3 update does not seem to have HDV options (see previous posting below - please answer this point in the other posting if you have ideas).

As MSP is now no longer marketed, I have been coaxed into using the competition's alternative pre-installed on a Sony Laptop - which I guess will be the way forward - but, for small parts of projects where I'd like to do some fancy stuff, I'd prefer to work on MSP on my old PIV 3.0GHz / WinXP sp2.

Has anyone else with Sony HC7 or HC9 managed to get them to speak to MSP 7 ? If so thanks for any tips.

:!: Does the pre-installed software capture from your Sony HDV?
If so capture with that and then edit in MSP.

You can probably use HDV Split to capture HD video.
http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/

It creates a transport stream HD video file .m2t which has to be converted to a program stream file to work in MSP. I'm not sure if you can get it to work with MSP7 without the HDV plug-in.

Quite a few of the folks use HDV Split to capture HD because it splits the file by scene. Ulead HDV capture doesn't give you that option.
