Hi there. Yesterday I tried to open a XviD file using VS X2. It was the first time that I tried to open XviD. Usually I edit MPEG2 and WMV files. I was surprised to find that the sound in XviD file was not there. Picture was fine but no sound. I tried to export part of the file and the exported file also lacked the sound. I instantly opened MPEG2 and WMV files (one of them was a 1080p) and they had sound. However, the XviD file didn't have any sound. Am I doing something wrong?

Do you have the latest XVid codec installed? Or do you just have DivX perhaps?

Hello Ken. Yes, I am using the Keopi's XviD build v1.2.1 codec. As far as I am concerned, this is the latest version. One of my concerns is whether VS X2 overrides this and used internal codec. I use XviD since it is free. The sound plays just fine on Media Player Classic using the above codec. The file is having AC3 5Ch audio. I will try with other files too later on.

I confess I do not use XVid as I have the DivX Pro package. But I installed about a year ago the then-latest XVid codec from SourceForge, I think it was... I thus do not have any XVid-encoded files I could test. Anyway, I just quickly made one using the XVid codec I have. I used a short HDV file which was ready to hand. I went to Share > Create Video File > Custom, and chose AVI > XVid as the format. I set the audio to mpeg layer 2 (though I had a variety of other choices, including PCM and MP3). After rendering, the resulting file, including its audio, played back perfectly in X2.

Thanks for your answer Ken, I will try this later. I tried to load some other files yesterday. XviD files. To my surprise, they worked fine. I think it is related to the codec VS X2 uses. I think that the built in codec is used instead of my XviD codec I have installed in my PC. I am not sure if this can apply to XviD too but I am pretty sure that built in DivX overrides the installed XviD. As I said, the file plays just fine on MPC using XviD codec.

There is no XVid codec natively installed, either as part of Video Studio or Windows. What you install manually is what you have. VS does, however, come with an old DivX codec in the 5 series. But unless that is specifically chosen, VS does not use it.

In the experiment I described above, I used the one and only XVid codec which I installed manually. And when I did the rendering, it very clearly brought up the XVid command panel. There was no suggestion that either the native DivX codec in VS, nor the new 7 Pro series I recently installed, had anything to do with the rendering.
